Rappresentanti nazionalisti e del partito di Falls Road si sono incontrati con gli Apprentice Boys a Derry, per mostrare solidarietà dopo il terzo attacco con bombe di vernice contro il loro storico edificio
“Siamo tutti assolutamente disgustati da questo attacco”, ha detto il parlamentare dello Sinn Féin Raymond McCartney.
“Tutti abbiamo visto nelle ultime settimane e negli ultimi mesi i grandi passi compiuti in questa città e la memorial hall e gli Apprentice Boys sono stati tutti parte di questa storia”.
Secondo Phillip Gillen, guida turistica per la sala, l’ultimo attacco è stato anche il peggiore.
“Le ultime tre notti abbiamo sofferto danni causati da bombe di vernice,” ha detto.
“Le porte sono state danneggiate con un costo alto. L’edificio è stato colpito in alto e in basso, sembra proprio un autentico caos. È estremamente scoraggiante”.
Mancano poche settimane alla parata annuale degli Apprentice Boys, che non viene più considerata contenziosa grazie al lavoro svolto nella comunità per facilitare l’evento.
Ma glii Apprentice Boys ritengono settari gli attacchi.
“Non è niente di nuovo per noi – questa è la sala più attaccata al mondo,” ha detto il Governatore Jim Brownlee.
“E la fanno sempre franca. Negli ultimi anni c’è stata una sola condanna”.
L’attacco è stato biasimato dal parlamentare SDLP Mark Durkan.
“Attacchi come questo sono attacchi contro l’intera comunità,” ha detto.
“Non è abbastanza ma vogliamo registrare il nostro disgusto e la nostra condanna.
“Vogliamo vedere la gente fornire senza indugio qualsiasi informazione possa essere utile alla polizia – affinché la piccola minoranza troppo spesso responsabile di questo genere di attacchi venga arrestata e portata davanti alla giustizia”.
Nel frattempo, Colly Kelly dello Sinn Féin ha chiesto la fine di tutti gli attacchi nella zona di Bishop Street.
“La settimana scorsa abbiamo visto attacchi alla Prima Chiesa Presbiteriana Derry e ora alla sala degli Apprentice Boys” ha affermato.
“Bombe di vernice sono state gettate anche dal quartiere di Fountain verso Bishop Street colpendo le facciate di alcune case in Long Tower Court e altre sono finite sulla strada.
“Non possiamo permettere che questo tipo di azioni insensate asi verifichino in questo periodo né che vengano utilizzate per aumentare le tensioni nella zona di Bishop Street/Fountain”.
La PSNI ha detto che le indagini sono in corso.

SF visits Apprentice Boys headquarters
Senior Sinn Féin members and nationalist representatives have met with the Apprentice Boys in Londonderry, to show solidarity with them after the third paint bomb attack on their memorial hall in as many days.
“We are all absolutely disgusted at this attack,” Sinn Féin Foyle MLA Raymond McCartney said
“We’ve all seen in recent weeks and recent months the great steps taken in this city and the memorial hall and the Apprentice Boys have all been part of that story.”
According to Phillip Gillen, a tour guide for the hall, the latest attack was also the worst.
“The last three nights, we’ve suffered paint bomb damage,” he said.
“We’ve just got the doors done – they’ve been damaged at a lot of cost. It’s up high and down low on the building and it just looks an absolute mess. It’s very disheartening.”
It comes just a few weeks ahead of the Apprentice Boys’ annual Relief of Derry parade, which is no longer considered contentious due to the work carried out in the community to facilitate the event.
But the Apprentice Boys believe that the attacks on the hall are sectarian hate crimes.
“It’s nothing new to us – this is the most attacked hall in the world,” Governor Jim Brownlee said.
“And the fact is they are getting away with it. Over the past few years, there has only been one conviction.”
The attack has also been condemned by Foyle SDLP MP Mark Durkan.
“Attacks like these are attacks on the entire community,” he said.
“It is not enough just to register our disgust and condemnation.
“We want to see people stand up and give whatever information may be of use to the police without delay – so that the small minority who are all too often responsible for carrying out this type of attack are apprehended and brought to justice.”
Meanwhile, Colly Kelly of Sinn Féin called for an end to all attacks in the Bishop Street area.
“In the past week, we have seen attacks on First Derry Presbyterian church and the now the Apprentice Boys’ hall,” he said.
“Paint bombs have also been thrown from the Fountain Estate out onto Bishop Street hitting the fronts of a number of homes in Long Tower Court and others landing in the roadway.
“We cannot allow these sorts of senseless actions to occur in this day and age nor be used to heighten tensions in and around the greater Bishop Street/Fountain area.”
The PSNI said their enquiries are ongoing and asked anyone with information to pass it on by contacting Strand Road Police Station on 0845 600 8000.
