L’ex Chief of Staff dell’IRA Thomas “Slab” Murphy venne avvertito quattro ore prima dell’imminente operazione transfrontaliera della polizia.
L’Irish Independent ha appreso che gli investigatori hanno scoperto la prova che Murphy ed i suoi soci fossero a conoscenza dell’operazione e che hanno distrutto computer e documenti poco prima dei rai avvenuti lo scrso mercoledì mattina.
Funzionari della sicurezza adesso sono seriamente preoccupati dal fatto che il leader repubblicano abbia un informatore in una delle agenzie stataliche indagano su di lui, sia al nord che al sud.
La PSNI e gli ufficiali di sorveglianza della Garda hanno riferito di aver visto una serie di incendi di grandi dimensioni nei pressi della casa di Murphy in South Armagh intorno alle 2. I resti carbonizzati di computer portatili, hard disk e documentazione sono stati scoperti nel corso delle ricerche da parte della polizia. L’Opeazione Loft ha avuto il via alle 6 del mattino, quando le squadre SWAT della PSNI e l’Emergency Response Unit della Garda hanno circondato la proprietà del milionario.
Facevano parte di una forza di 300 unità, compresa la polizia e gli agenti doganali su entrambi i lati della frontiera, che hanno eseguito perquisizioni in 11 Contee.
Una grande quantità di documento e oltre 100mila euro in contanti sono stati sequestrati nelle perquisizioni a 22 abitazioni e locali commerciali.
Gli ufficiali hanno anche scoperto uno dei più grandi impianti di riciclaggio di diesel mai ritrovato lungo il confine. Le fonti hanno rivelato che aveva la capacità di produrre oltre 5 milioni di euro di carburante illegale un anno. Nello stesso sito sono stati sequestrati 40.000 litri di carburante.
L’indagine è stata guidata dal Criminal Assets Bureau (CAB) di Dublino. Gli investigatori hanno scoperto una complessa rete di conti bancari intestati a nomi fittizi, usati per riciclare circa 100 milioni di euro solamente negli ultimi 18 mesi. Più di 1,6 milioni di euro sono stati finora congelati su conti bancari nella Repubblica, in Irlanda del Nord, nel Regno Unito e nell’Europa continentale.
Ma fonti dicono che la cifra è destinata a crescere notevolmente nei prossimi mesi, mentre continuano a rintracciare altri conti correnti in tutta Europa e oltre.
Tuttavia l’Irish Independent ha appreso che le forze di sicurezza sono “molto preoccupate” che la loro manovra sembra essere stata compromessa.
Una fonte della sicurezza ha detto: “Gli incendi sono stati improvvisamente accesi in alcuni posti intorno alla stessa ora, le 2 del mattino, ed erano ancora fumanti quando il raid ha avuto luogo.
“I portatili, dischi per computer e una grande quantità di documentazione era stata distrutta nelle fiamme. Sembravano sapere che un raid fosse imminente, ma ora devono spiegare perché questi incendi hanno avuto luogo.”
Gli investigatori hanno arrestato Murphy dopo che era uscito da casa a bordo della sua auto, mentre arrivavano gli elicotteri.
Murphy, 60 anni, è attualmente accusato presso la Special Criminal Court di nove capi di imputazione per la mancata presentazione della dichiarazione dei redditi. Sta portando un caso alla Corte Suprema affinché il suo processo sia tenuto con giudice e giuria. Lui e i suoi familiari stanno lottando contro una richiesta di 5 milioni di euro di tasse presentata dal CAB.
La richiesta è stata fatta dopo un’operazione simile avvenuta nel 2006, quando CAB, la dogana e la ex Assets Recovery Agency nel Nord scoprirono tracce di un’economia nascosta del valore di centinaia di milioni di euro.
Nella perquisizione fu anche scoperto una grande camera di tortura costruita appositamente, accanto alla casa di Murphy, che era stata utilizzata dai Provos per interrogare e torturare le loro vittime.
Comunque l’inchiesta non fermò la vasta operazione di riciclaggio. Fonti della sicurezza dicono che è diventato molto più sofisticato e scientifico.
“Murphy e il suo gruppo hanno di chimici che lavorano per loro nella produzione di un combustibile di qualità molto più elevata rispetto al passato”, ha rivelato una fonte della sicurezza.
“Sono anche diventati tecnologici con la nuova generazione e hanno un ragazzo che è un esperto di computer”.

IRA boss Murphy tipped off ahead of Garda raid
FORMER IRA chief of staff Thomas ‘Slab’ Murphy was tipped off four hours before he was to be targeted in a major cross-Border police swoop.
The Irish Independent has learned that detectives discovered evidence that the notorious oil smuggler and his associates knew about the operation and destroyed computers and documents just before the raids took place last Wednesday morning.
Senior security officials are now seriously concerned that the Republican leader has an informant in one of the state agencies investigating him either in the North or the south.
PSNI and garda surveillance officers reported seeing a number of large fires close to the home of Murphy in south Armagh around 2am. The charred remains of laptops, computer disks and documentation were later found in the course of searches by police. Operation Loft swung into action at 6am when specialist SWAT teams from the PSNI and the Garda Emergency Response Unit surrounded the millionaire’s property.
They were part of a 300-strong force, including police and customs on both sides of the Border, who carried out searches across 11 counties.
A large amount of documentation and over €100,000 in cash was seized in the raids at 22 private homes and business premises.
Officers also discovered one of the largest diesel-laundering plants ever found along the Border. Sources have revealed that it had the capacity to produce over €5m of illegal fuel a year. And 40,000 litres of fuel was seized at the same site.
The investigation was spearheaded by the Criminal Assets Bureau in Dublin. Investigators uncovered a complex web of bank accounts in fictitious names, which have been used to launder an estimated €100m in the past 18 months alone. Over €1.6m has so far been frozen in bank accounts in the Republic, Northern Ireland, the UK and mainland Europe.
But sources say that the figure is expected to rise dramatically over the coming months as they continue to track down more of the accounts across Europe and further afield.
However, the Irish Independent understands that senior security sources are “very concerned” that their operation appeared to have been compromised.
A security source said: “Fires were suddenly lit at a number of locations at around the same time, at 2am, and they were still smouldering when the raid took place.
“Laptops, computer disks and a large amount of documentation had been destroyed in the fires. They seemed to know that a raid was imminent but they now have to explain why this burning took place.”
Detectives arrested Murphy shortly after he drove off from his home as the helicopters arrived.
Murphy (60) is currently charged before the Special Criminal Court with nine counts of failing to file income tax returns. He is taking a Supreme Court case to have his trial heard before a judge and jury. He and his family members are also fighting a €5m tax demand from CAB.
The demand was issued following a similar raid on Murphy’s operation in 2006 when CAB, Customs and the former Assets Recovery Agency in the North uncovered evidence of a hidden economy worth hundreds of millions of euro.
Also discovered in the search was a large, purpose-built torture chamber, close to Murphy’s home, that had been used by the Provos to interrogate and torture their victims.
However, the investigation did not stop the huge laundering operation. Security sources say it has become much more sophisticated and scientific.
“Murphy and his group have a number of chemists working for them producing a much higher quality fuel than before,” a security source revealed.
“They have also gone hi-tech with the younger generation and have one guy who is a computer expert.”
