Il nuovo reggimento dell’esercito britannico, lo Scottish and North Irish Yeomanry, ha marciato per la prima volta sulle strade nordirlandesi
Sabato mattina i soldati reclutati localmente hanno marciato a Carrickfergus, percorrendo la strada dal Cenotafio fino alla chiesa in cui si è svolta una cerimonia.
L’evento serviva anche a commemorare una battaglia della Seconda Guerra Mondiale in cui i precursori del reggimento, il North Irish Horse, ricoprirono un ruolo fondamentale nello sfondare le linee tedesche in Italia nel maggio 1944.
Il comandante della squadriglia, il maggiore Mark Gannon, ha dichiarato: “Questa è la prima volta che abbiamo sfilato come squadrone di quel reggimento.
“È una storia orgogliosamente condivisa con il North Irish Horse che risale fino al 1944 per questo particolare evento.
Il maggiore Gannon ha detto che al reggimento era stato dato il permesso dall’esercito canadese di utilizzare la foglia d’acero sulla propria divisa, in onore “del sacrificio e dell’impegno mostrato” dai soldati del reggimento.

Scottish and North Irish Yeomanry holds first parade in Carrickfergus
The Army’s newest regiment, the Scottish and North Irish Yeomanry, has held its first parade in Northern Ireland.
The locally recruited TA soldiers marched from the Cenotaph to a church service in Carrickfergus on Saturday morning.
The event also commemorated a World War Two battle in which the regiment’s forerunner, the North Irish Horse, played a pivotal role in breaking through German lines in Italy in May 1944.
The squadron’s commanding officer, Major Mark Gannon, said: “This is the first time that we’ve paraded as a squadron of that regiment.
“It’s a very proud history that we have with the North Irish Horse which dates back to 1944 for this particular event.
Major Gannon said the regiment had been given permission by the Canadian army to feature the maple leaf on its uniforms in honour of the “sacrifice and commitment that was made” by the regiment’s soldiers.
