Un soldato britannico in pensione è stato arrestato nel corso delle indagini per l’omicidio di un uomo con difficoltà di apprendimento avvenuto in Irlanda del Nord nel 1974.
John Pat Cunningham, 27 anni, fu ucciso dal Life Guards Regiment dell’esercito inglese in un campo di Benburb, Contea di Armagh, il 15 giugno 1974. A causa delle difficoltà di apprendimento, aveva l’intelligenza di un bambino tra i 6 e i 10 anni.
Il settantatrenne viene detenuto in Inghilterra. Verrà trasferito nella Serious Crime Suite della stazione di polizia di Antrim per essere interrogato dagli agenti nordirlandesi.
Il caso fu riaperto dalla PSNI e, dopo il riesame delle prove disponibili, è stata avviata un’indagine per omicidio.
John Cunningham aveva paura degli uomini in uniforme e stava scappando da una pattuglia dell’esercito quando gli spararono alle spalle.
Nel 2013 il governo chiese scusa per la sua morte.

A retired British soldier has been arrested by detectives investigating the shooting of a man with learning difficulties in Northern Ireland in 1974.
John Pat Cunningham, 27, was shot by the Army in a field in Benburb, Co Armagh.
The 73-year-old suspect was detained in England. He is being taken to Northern Ireland for questioning at the police’s Serious Crime Suite in Antrim.
The case was re-opened by the Police Service of Northern Ireland and a murder investigation started following a re-examination of the available evidence.
Mr Cunningham had a fear of men in uniform and was running away from an Army patrol when he was shot.
The Government apologised for his death in 2013.
