Un membro in servizio nella forze armate britanniche è stato arrestato per sospetti legati al terrorismo in Irlanda del Nord.
Il trentenne è stato fermato mercoledì intorno alle 12:20 e Scotland Yard ha fatto sapere che sono state perquisite un’abitazione di South Devon e un’area boschiva.
È stato arrestato con l’accusa di preparazione di atti di terrorismo in un’azione pianificata in precedenza legata ad un’indagine antiterrorismo in Irlanda del Nord.
La Polizia Metropolitana ha detto che non ci sono informazioni che suggeriscano una minaccia immediata.
La PSNI sta inoltre effettuando ricerche nell’ambito delle stesse indagini.
Scotland Yard ha detto: “Un uomo di circa 30 anni è stato arrestato nel Somerset con l’accusa di reati di terrorismo.
“È stato arrestato ai sensi della Sezione 5 del Terrorism Act alle 12:20 di mercoledì 24 agosto da agenti del Commando Antiterrorismo della Polizia Metropolitana, supportati dai colleghi della polizia di Avon e Somerset e Devon e Cornovaglia, con l’accusa di essere coinvolto nella preparazione di atti di terrorismo.
“L’arresto di oggi è stata pianificato in anticipo e guidata dalle informazioni ottenute nel corso di un’indagine sul terrorismo in Irlanda del nord. Possiamo rassicurare la popolazione che non esistono informazioni che suggeriscano un’immediata minaccia per le nostre comunità”.
Nell’arresto non sono stati coinvolti agenti armati.
La minaccia per l’Inghilterra, Galles e Scozia derivante dal terrorismo nordirlandese viene classificata some sostanziale, mentre la minaccia interna alle Sei Contee è valutata come “grave”.

Member of British armed forces arrested over terrorism in north
A SERVING member of the British armed forces has been arrested on suspicion of terrorism linked to Northern Ireland.
The 30-year-old was held in Somerset at around 12.20pm on Wednesday and Scotland Yard said a house in South Devon and a wooded area were being searched.
He was arrested on suspicion of preparation for acts of terrorism in a pre-planned swoop as part of an investigation into Northern Ireland-related terrorism.
Met Police said there is no intelligence to suggest an immediate threat.
The PSNI are also carrying out searches as part of the investigation.
Scotland Yard said: “A 30-year-old man has been arrested in Somerset on suspicion of terrorism offences.
“He was arrested at 12.20pm on Wednesday August 24 by officers from the Metropolitan Police Service’s Counter Terrorism Command, supported by colleagues from Avon and Somerset and Devon and Cornwall Police, on suspicion of being involved in the preparation of acts of terrorism under Section 5 of the Terrorism Act.
“Today’s arrest was pre-planned and intelligence-led as part of an investigation into Northern Ireland-related terrorism. The public can be reassured that there is no intelligence to suggest an immediate threat to our communities.”
No armed police were involved in the arrest.
The threat to England, Wales and Scotland from Northern Ireland-related terrorism is currently rated as substantial, while the threat to Northern Ireland itself is ranked as severe.
