Un allarme sicurezza è in corso a Derry, dopo la presunta esplosione di un oggetto all’interno di un bidone dell’immondizia nel quartiere di Galliagh
Agenti della polizia e artificieri dell’esercito sono sulla scena dell’allarme sicurezza lanciato mercoledì mattina in Skeoge Road, a Derry.
L’Ispettore Capo Tony Callaghan ha detto: “Sono giunte voci di un forte boato avvenuto intorno alle 23:45 di ieri sera.
“Gli agenti di polizia sono giunti nella zona e sembra che qualcosa contenuto in un bidone sia esploso.
“Adesso stiamo eseguendo ulteriori controlli nell’area alla luce del sole”.
Nella zona vivrebbero alcuni politici.
Un cane poliziotto è stato utilizzato per condurre le ricerche e l’elicottero della PSNI ha volteggiato in cielo per gran parte della mattinata.
Raymond McCartney, parlamentare dello Sinn Féin, ha detto di aver ascoltato il racconto dei residenti.
“In breve tempo, la gente ha detto di ritenere che alcuni giovani dato alle fiamme messo una bombola di gas, ma questa mattina c’era un cordone della PSNI. La polizia ha parlato di un bidone in Skeoge Road e della presenza di alcuni cavi elettrici che partivano da esso.
“Adesso stanno prendendo tutte le precauzioni necessarie per assicurare che non ci sia una bomba e tutti stiamo attendendo gli sviluppi”.
Brian Tierney, consigliere dello SDLP a Derry, si è appellato alla pazienza dei residenti durante le operazioni di ricerca.
“Se questo è un ordigno esplosivo vorrei che nulla accadesse agli agenti della PSNI” ha affermato.
“L’ultima cosa che vogliamo è un ferito o una vittima in questa zona.
“Sfortunatamente è accaduto questo, ma chiedo alla gente di sopportare la polizia e permettere agli agenti di compiere le loro indagini e speriamo che la strada venga riaperta al più presto”.
Il membro del Policing Board e parlamentare dell’UUP Ross Hussey ha commentato: “Ancora una volta i residenti e la polizia vedono la loro sicurezza personale messa a rischio da criminali e codardi senza volto in un attacco indiscriminato.
“Il metodo più rapido per la comunità di eliminare queste bande criminali è di appoggiare senza riserve la polizia, passandogli qualsiasi informazione”.
La strada tra la rotonda di Glengalliagh e Buncrana Road al momento è chiusa.

Police searches in Derry after suspected explosion
A security alert is continuing in Londonderry following an explosion inside a bin in the city’s Galliagh area.
Officers and army bomb experts have been at the scene of the security alert at Skeoge Road since early on Wednesday morning a
Chief Inspector Tony Callaghan said: “Reports of a loud bang were received at about 11.45pm last night.
“Officers attended the area and it appeared something inside a bin had exploded.
“Further daylight checks of the area are now being conducted.”
It is understood a number of politicians live nearby.
A sniffer dog was used to search the area and a PSNI helicopter was flying overhead for much of the morning.
Sinn Féin MLA Raymond McCartney said he had received reports from residents about the incident.
He said: “Within a short period of time, people were saying they believed it had been young people who had put a gas canister in a fire, but this morning when I was leaving home to go to the office there was a PSNI cordon just being put in place, they said there was a bin here on the Skeoge Road and there was wires leading from it.
“So they are now taking all the precautions necessary to ensure this isn’t a bomb and we’re awaiting the outcome of that.”
SDLP Councillor Brian Tierney appealed for the community to be patient while searches were carried out.
“If this is an explosive device I would rather the PSNI were safe rather than sorry,” he said.
“The last thing we want is someone hurt or killed here along this area.
“It’s unfortunate that we have to do this, but I would just appeal to people to bear with police and allow them to carry out their investigation and hopefully we’ll get the road opened as soon as possible.”
Ulster Unionist MLA and Policing Board Member Ross Hussey also commented: “Once again local people and the security forces have had their personal safety put at risk by faceless thugs and cowards as the result of an indiscriminate attack.
“The quickest way for the community to rid themselves of these criminal gangs is by giving total backing to the Police and passing on any information they have.”
The road is currently closed between the Glengalliagh roundabout and the Buncrana Road.
The security operation is expected to continue for some time and the police are advising the public to avoid the area.
