Uno degli uomini sospettato di essere coinvolto nell’omicidio di un soldato britannico in Irlanda del Nord, avvenuto nel 1977, sarebbe stato rintracciato negli USA
Il soldato ventinovenne, originario di Gloucestershire, fu rapito dall’IRA nel South Armagh il 14 maggio 1977. Il suo corpo non è mai stato ritrovato.
Il quotidiano The Sun disse di aver parlato con Maguire nella sua casa nel New Jersey.
Rimpianto
Il giornale affermò che Patrick Maguire inizialmente negò “qualsiasi collegamento” con l’omicidio ma diceva di provare “rimpianto” sulla notte nel quale ebbe luogo.
Riportando le sue parole, si leggeva: “Non c’è niente che posso dire su quella notte… Certamente ho dei rimpianti… ma non dirò nulla di più”.
Secondo The Sun, Maguire sta lavorando come piastrellista e vive con la moglie ed i suoi quattro figli in una casa a Dumont.
Aggiunge che vorrebbe ritornare in South Armagh perché gli mancano i collegamenti familiari lasciati indietro.
Omicidio famigerato
Maguire ha anche detto di aver cercato una consulenza legale per le accuse di omicidio sulla quale stanno lavorando i suoi avvocati.
L’omicidio del capitano Nairac fu uno degli omicidi più noti durante i Troubles nel Nordirlanda.
La PSNI non conferma di cercare Maguire in collegamento con l’omicidio ma riferisce che le sue indagini sono “attive e in corso”.
Un portavoce della polizia afferma: “Un uomo è attualmente in custodia, accusato dell’omicidio e gli investigatori della PSNI stanno ancora lavorando per rintracciare ed estradare almeno altri due sospettati.
I collegamenti continueranno con le forze dell’ordine di tutto il mondo, compresi gli Stati Uniti”.
Lo scorso mese Kevin Crilly, 59 anni di Jonesborough, Contea di Armagh, fu accusato formalmente dell’omicidio e di due reati per rapimento e sequestro.
Fu rilasciato su cauzione, dopo l’udienza tenutasi presso il tribunale di Newry.
Crilly fu filmato in segreto da BBC nel 2007 per il programma Spotlight, che analizzava la morte del capitano Nairac.
Altri tre uomini erano già stati condannati per l’omicidio.

Nairac ‘suspect’ traced in US
One of the men suspected of involvement in the 1977 murder of a British soldier in Northern Ireland has been tracked down in the USA, it has been reported.
The 29-year-old was abducted by the IRA in south Armagh on 14 May 1977. His body has never been found.
The Sun newspaper said it has spoken to Mr Maguire in his New Jersey home.
‘Regrets’
The paper claimed that Patrick Maguire at first denied “any connection” with the murder but said he eventually admitted having “regrets” about the night it took place.
It has quoted him as saying: “There’s nothing I can say about that night…..Of course I have regrets about it….but I’m not going to say any more.”
The Sun said Mr Maguire was now working as a tiler and living with his wife and four grown-up children at a house in Dumont.
It added that he wanted return to south Armagh as he missed the family connections that he had left behind.
‘Notorious killing’
Mr Maguire also said he had taken legal advice about murder allegations and was under instruction from his lawyers.
The murder of Captain Nairac was one of the most notorious killings during the Troubles in Northern Ireland.
The Police Service of Northern Ireland would not confirm that they are seeking Mr Maguire in connection with the murder but said that their investigation is “active and ongoing”.
A police spokesperson said: “One man is currently on remand charged with the murder and PSNI detectives are still working to locate and extradite at least two other suspects.
Liaisons will continue with law enforcement agencies around the world, including the US.”
Last month, Kevin Crilly, 59, from Lower Foughill Road, Jonesborough, County Armagh, was charged with the murder and two counts of kidnapping and false imprisonment.
He was released on bail following the hearing at Newry Magistrates Court.
Mr Crilly was secretly filmed by the BBC in 2007 as part of a Spotlight programme examining Captain Nairac’s death.
Three other men have previously been convicted of the murder.
