Protiettili sono stati esplosi contro gli agenti presenti a Newry durante l’allarme sicurezza di sabato sera
L’attacco sarebbe avvenuto intorno alle 21.15 di sabato.
Non ci sarebbero stati feriti.
Nel comunicato della polizia, il District Commander, Soprintendente Capo Alisdair Robinson, ha condannato l’attacco e affermato:
“Questo attacco è un vile tentativo di assassinare gli agenti nel corso del loro lavoro mentre indagavano su un oggetto sospetto che avrebbe potuto potenzialmente uccidere o ferire non solo i poliziotti ma anche i membri della locale comunità.
“La polizia continuerà a fornire il servizio alla comunità nonostante la minaccia proveniente da questi terroristi criminali, ma dobbiamo essere coscienti di tale minaccia”, ha aggiunto.
“Chi ha compiuto questi atti senza senso mostra un completo disprezzo per gli uomini e non fanno parte della società nella quale la maggioranza delle persone in Irlanda del Nord desidera vivere”, ha continuato.
Dominic Bradley, parlamentare SDLP, ritiene che la responsabilità di quest’ultimo attacco sia da ascrivere ai repubblicani.
“Sembra che l’ordigno vicino alla sede ferroviaria sia il tentativo di attirare gli agenti in zona e di sparargli contro”, afferma.
“Tutti noi dobbiamo tenere i nervi saldi in queste circostanze e permettere alla polizia di fare il proprio lavoro. Ritengo che il modo migliore per sconfiggere queste persone sia attraverso la stretta collaborazione tra la comunità e la forza di polizia”, ha aggiunto.

Shots fired at police during Newry alert
Shots were fired at police attending the ongoing security alert in Newry on Saturday night.
It’s understood the gun attack happened around 9.15pm.
There were no reports of any injuries.
In a statement from police, District Commander Chief Superintendent Alisdair Robinson condemned the attack and said:
“This attack was a cowardly attempt to kill police officers in the course of their duty as they investigate a suspicious object that may have the potential to kill or injury not only police but members of the local community”
“Police will continue to deliver a service to the community despite the threat from these criminal terrorists, but we must also be mindful of that threat” he added.
“The people who carry out these senseless acts show a total disregard for their fellow man and are not part of the society within which the majority of people of Northern Ireland wish to live” he continued.
SDLP MLA Dominic Bradley believes dissident republicans are behind this latest attack.
“It certainly looks like the device at the railway line was an attempt to lure officers in and attack them by shooting at them” he said.
“All of us must hold our nerve under these circumstances and allow police to do their work. I think the main way of defeating these people is through close co-operation between the local community and the police force” he added.
