I residenti di East Belfast sono preoccupati dopo che una serie di “bandiere UVF” sono state erette sui lampioni.
Secondo il parlamentare per East Belfast di Alliance Party, Chris Lyttle, le bandiere sono state esposte in vista della parata che si terrà in occasione del centenario della costituzione dell’Ulster Volunteer Force.
Ha detto che era stato contattato dai residenti della zona, arrabbiati sul erigere delle bandiere sulle rotte principali.
“Sono stato contattato dai residenti di East Belfast che sono arrabbiati per l’erezione di bandiere UVF lungo le principali vie, senza consultazione o notifica”, spiega il politico.
“L’affermazione secondo cui uomini a volto coperto hanno utilizzato veicoli con piattaforme aeree alla luce del giorno per erigere le bandiere è particolarmente funesta ed è una sfida per lo Stato di diritto.
“I residenti che si oppongono a questo comportamento non sono stati consultati, le organizzazioni interessate sono considerate come paramilitari e le agenzie governative non hanno intrapreso alcuna azione per rimuovere le bandiere.
“Sono stato in contatto con la PSNI per informarli delle preoccupazioni dei residenti e chiedere quali azioni possono prendere con le altre agenzie per affrontare la questione”.
Lyttle ha anche invitato il primo ed il vice primo ministro, assiame alla PSNI, di “affrontare globalmente l’abuso di tutte le bandiere e gli emblemi”.
Questo pomeriggio un portavoce della PSNI ha detto che la polizia era “consapevole del fatto che delle bandiere sono state erette a East Belfast in relazione alla Parata Commemorativa 1913 che si svolgerà sabato prossimo”.
“Queste bandiere sono state erette lungo il percorso della parata e non sono legate ad un’organizzazione vietata”, ha detto.
“Alti funzionari di polizia si incontreranno con i rappresentanti politici e comunitari insieme con gli organizzatori della parata all’inizio della prossima settimana per risolvere eventuali problemi.
“Gli organizzatori hanno assicurato che le bandiere saranno rimosse immediatamente dopo la parata di sabato prossimo”.
L’UVF è stata fondata un secolo fa da Sir Edward Carson per combattere contro la Home Rule.
Tuttavia, nel 1966, l’organizzazione paramilitare UVF è stata costituita per combattere quello che venne visto come un rigurgito del nazionalismo irlandese – adottando lo stesso noma.
Concerns after UVF flags erected in east Belfast
Residents have raised concerns after a series of ‘UVF flags’ were erected in east Belfast.
According to east Belfast Alliance MLA Chris Lyttle the flags were put up ahead of a forthcoming parade to mark the centenary of the formation of the Ulster Volunteer Force.
He said he had been contacted by local residents in the area, angry over the erecting of the flags on main routes.
“I have been contacted by local residents in east Belfast who are angry at the erection of UVF flags along key arterial routes, without consultation or notification,” he said.
“The allegation that men with masked identities used elevated work platform vehicles in broad day light to erect the flags is particularly sinister and a challenge for the rule of law.
“Residents who object to this behaviour were not consulted, the organisations concerned are regarded as paramilitary and government agencies have taken no action to remove the flags.
“I have been in contact with the PSNI to inform them of residents’ concerns and ask what action they can take with the other agencies to address this matter.”
Mr Lyttle has also called on the First and Deputy First Ministers, along with the PSNI, to “comprehensively address the misuse of all flags and emblems”.
This afternoon a spokesman for the PSNI said it was “aware that flags are being erected in East Belfast in relation to the 1913 Commemoration Parade taking place next Saturday”.
“These flags are being erected along the route of the parade and are not related to a proscribed organisation,” it said.
“Senior police officers will be meeting with community and political representatives together with parade organisers early next week to address any concerns.
“Parade organisers have given their assurances that these flags will be removed immediately following next Saturday’s parade.”
The UVF was founded a century ago by Sir Edward Carson to fight against Home Rule.
However in 1966 the paramilitary organisation, the UVF, was formed to combat what it saw as a rise in Irish nationalism – adopting the same name.
