Squadra GAA obiettivo di un attacco ad Antrim

Una pipe bomb è stata trovata davanti ad un centro comunitario ad Antrim, dove si stava allenando una squadra della Gaelic Athletic Association

Un allarme sicurezza era stato lanciato dopo il ritrovamento di un oggetto sospetto all’esterno di un centro comunitario nel quartiere di Stiles.

I giocatori del St Comgall’s GAA Club sono stati scortati fuori dall’impianto dalla polizia e l’area è stata cordonata.

Adrian Watson, sindaco di Antrim, parla di “attacco disgustoso da parte di teppisti senza cervello che non hanno nulla da offrire alla comunità”.

“Questi sono giovani uomini che si allenano in un centro comunitario, circondato da centinaia di case” ha aggiunto.

“Non hanno fatto nulla di male, tranne essere membri di un club GAA“.

Tommy Crilly, presidente del club, ha detto: “Siamo palesemente un’organizzazione non settaria, i cui sforzi nell’incoraggiare la partecipazione di tutte le sezioni della comunità di Antrim sono ben riconosciute.

“Ci auguriamo di poter restare in sicurezza per fornire il nostro continuo contributo all’arricchimento della vita sportiva nella zona di Antrim”.

La polizia sta cercando un secondo ordigno e l’area intorno al centro comunitario resterà cordonata anche questa mattina, quando le ricerche proseguiranno alla luce del giorno.

GAA team ‘target of bomb attack’ in Antrim

A pipe bomb has been found at a community centre in Antrim where a GAA team was training, the town’s mayor Adrian Watson has said.

A security alert was declared after a suspicious device was found outside the community centre on the Stiles estate.

Players from St Comgall’s GAA Club were escorted from the premises by police and the area has been cordoned off.

Mr Watson said it was a “disgusting attack by mindless thugs who had nothing to offer the community”.

“These are young men training in a community centre surrounded by hundreds of home,” he added.

“They have done nothing wrong, bar be members of a GAA club.”

Tommy Crilly, chairman of St Comgall’s GAA club, said: “We are a patently non-sectarian organisation, whose concerted efforts in encouraging participation from all sections of the Antrim community are well recognised.

“We would very much wish to be allowed to continue in safety to make our ongoing significant contribution to the rich sporting life of the Antrim area.”

Police have said they are looking for a second device and the area will remain cordoned off until Friday morning when the search will resume in daylight.
