Il 21 novembre 2012 i prigionieri Repubblicani detenuti in Roe 4 a Maghaberry conclusero la loro lunga protesta.
Solo pochi giorni dopo, il 29 novembre, sono stato arrestato, portato nel centro interrogatorio di Antrim prima di essere accusato e poi imprigionato in Maghaberry.
Come molti lettori sapranno, c’è stata una lunga e continuativa campagna per porre fine alla pratica delle perquisizioni forzate. Ecco la mia descrizione del procedimento degradante e umiliante che i POW repubblicani devono sopportare nella prigione di Maghaberry.
Quando sono arrivato a Maghaberry sono stato portato alla “reception”, dove sono stato fotografato, hanno registrato i miei dati personali e hanno preso le impronte digitali. Quindi sono stato informato della procedura alla quale sarei dovuto sottostrare, comprendente la strip search.
A questo punto gli ho fatto sapere che non avrei acconsentito alla strip search perché è un metodo umiliante e degradante per i detenuti.
Quindi mi hanno spostato in una “cella di detenzione” e informato che avevo 15 minuti per cambiare opinione.
Questo “periodo di riflessione” è concepito come uno stratagemma psicologico per incutere timore e preoccupazione nei prigionieri mentre aspettano per quello che deve avvenire.
Durante i 15 minuti, ho visto la squadra antisommossa radunarsi fuori dalla mia cella, nel tentativo di intimidirmi.
Questa particolare squadra antisommossa è composta da più di sei secondini che indossano tute nere, guanti chirurgici, pesanti stivali neri e una cintura intorno alla vita con i manganelli.
La porta della cella si apre e vengo portato nella cella accanto, che è di dimensioni maggiori. Una vlta entrato mi sono seduto su una panca di legno. Poi la squadra antisommossa entra nella cella.
Il secondino al comando della squadra antisommossa mi ha chiesto se ho cambiato idea sulla strip search. Ancora una volta, gli rispondo che non mi conformerò a quella pratica degradante.
Sbraitano dicendomi di alzarmi e mi ritrovo su una stuoia sistemata sul pavimento di fronte a me. Due secondini fanno la guardia alla porta della cella, uno è di fronte a me, due stanno a ciascun lato, uno si posiziona dietro e un altro resta in un angolo a “osservare” la strip search.
Il secondino che mi sta davanti afferra il mio viso con entrambe le mani mentre, contemporaneamente, le due coppie a ciascun lato mi prendono le braccia e le tirano, costringendomi a stare nella posizione di crocifissione. Entrambi i polsi vengono contorti con forza e piegati all’indietro, provocandomi forte dolore e disagio.
Vengo costretto a mettermi in ginocchio. Quello di fronte mi spinge la faccia a terra, il secondino dietro mi tira all’indietro entrambe le gambe. Adesso giaccio a terra ancora a braccia larghe tenuto da quattro secondini.
Rimango forzatamente tenuto giù con la faccia premuta sul pavimento. Entrambe le gambe sono tenute da due secondini. Le mie braccia sono ancora allargata con entrambi i polsi contorti e piegati in una posizione quasi impossibile.
Ora sto sdraiato sul pavimento della cella completamente nudo, umiliato e degradato. I miei vestiti giacciono in un angolo della cella. Il mio viso è palpitante, i polsi fanno male e, mentre resto lì nudo, i responsabili torreggiano sopra di me.
La squadra antisommossa poi iniziare ad uscire dalla cella, uno alla volta. Sono ancora steso a terra, nudo, e pretendono che non li guardi né che mi alzi da terra fino a quando sono usciti dalla cella. Uno si chiede cosa temano da un prigioniero solo, nudo e indifeso.
Adesso che sono solo, mi vesto, pensando a quello che è appena accaduto.
Dopo vengo portato in un ala della prigione in cui sono rinchiuso 23 ore al giorno. Ci sono rimasto per più di una settimana fino a quando non mi trasferiscono nell’ala repubblicana di Roe 4.
Quando entro in Roe 4, la prima cosa che mi colpisce è l’odore. Mi colpisce come un muro di mattoni. Solo una quindicina di giorni prima, i prigionieri repubblicani avevano concluso una “dirty protest” durata 18 mesi.
Quando mi scortano nell’ala noto la squadra antisommossa fissarmi. È la stessa squadra antisommossa che perquisisce i prigionieri repubblicani in entrata e in uscita del carcere: la stessa squadra antisommossa che mi aveva spogliato solo una settimana prima.
La squadra antisommossa staziona in Roe 4 ogni giorno della settimana; diversi membri della squadra antisommossa mi circondano e mi accompagnano alla cella. Questa è la mia prima esperienza di controllo del movimento che a volte consinste in un gran numero di secondini intorno ad un singolo prigioniero.
Appena entro nella cella, la porta si chiude fragorosamente dietro di me.
Ci sono escrementi umani sulle pareti e sul soffitto. Un piccolo tentativo di pulirla era stato compiuto dalle autorità carcerarie ma gli escrementi sono ancora evidenti. Al momento della stesura di questo testo (fine gennaio) gli escrementi sono ancora sulle pareti e sul soffitto. Alla fine sono portato in cortile, dove il resto dei POW di Roe 4 sono riuniti.
Ho ricevuto un caloroso benvenuto da parte di tutti, parole gentili e strette di mano. È chiaro che chiunque ha la sfortuna di trovarsi qui in carcere verrà fatto sentire molto ben accolto dai prigionieri repubblicani.
Sono poi aggiornato sulla situazione attuale. Mi è stato detto le condizioni sono come durante la protesta dei prigionieri, chiusi per 23 ore al giorno nelle celle ricoperte di escrementi. Mi raccontano delle “dighe” messe sotto alle porte per impedire all’urina di rientrare nelle loro celle. Ho anche sentito parlare degli spietati pestaggi che negli ultimi anni sono stati compiuti dalla squadra antisommossa. Repubblicani con barbe e capelli lunghi picchiati e trascinati su e giù per il corridoio dai secondini. Queste potrebbero essere storie dell’epoca della Blanket protest, ma non lo sono. Fanno parte delle attuali lotte nella prigione di Maghaberry.
In un breve periodo di tempo, ho subito imparato che i POW repubblicani di Roe 4 sono un gruppo di uomini disciplinato e ben organizzato, che lavorano insieme per creare un ambiente migliore e più umano per i prigionieri repubblicani.
A Roe 4 ci sono repubblicani di ogni età e provenienza. Ci sono uomini che sono già stati in carcere nei Blocchi H di Long Kesh e nella prigione di Crumlin Road. Ci sono ragazzi giovani (e meno giovani) che stanno vivendo il primo assaggio della vita carceraria.
Ogni giorno è una battaglia costante contro il regime oppressivo, che è ancora in vigore.
La gente comune non può vederlo o sentirlo, ma quotidianamente i prigionieri di Roe 4 stanno combattendo contro un sistema draconiano e disumano.
Sono oltre due mesi che i prigionieri repubblicani hanno deciso di sospendere la Dirty protest. Da allora, tuttavia, non ci sono state variazioni significative al regime in base al quale sono detenuti.
La squadra antisommossa di Roe 4 sembrana determinata a provocare conflitti, nel tentativo di spingere di nuovo i POW alla protesta. Hanno il potere, “per motivi di sicurezza”, di influenare e anche di non tener conto delle decisioni prese dalle alte sfere dell’amministrazione carceraria di Maghaberry.
In questo momento la squadra antisommossa si rifiuta le liste di credito telefoniche dai prigionieri di Roe 4. Questo significa che quando il nostro credito telefonico si esaurisce, non avremo modo di contattare le nostre famiglie se non durante le visite. Si rifiutano anche di accettare le richieste settimanali di frutta e per spirito di vendetta il nostro accesso ai vari servizi è limitato. Un esempio di ciò è la decisione della squadra antisommossa di limitare il nostro accesso alla zona degli esercizi.
La degradazione e l’umiliazione dei prigionieri è diffusa dalle autorità carcerarie di Maghaberry. Il movimento controllato rimane al suo posto. A volte è permesso ad un solo prigioniero alla volta di stare nel corridoio. Se avete bisogno di una doccia, diversi membri della squadra antisommossa vi accompagneranno. E lo stesso se dovete andare in lavanderia o tornare in cella.
Ci sono altre forme di vendetta, come privare i prigionieri del sonno. Durante le ore notturne e nelle prime ore del giorno i secondini aprono lo sportello della porta della cella e puntano una torcia accesa sul tuo viso prima di sbattere violentemente lo sportello. Regolarmente picchiano e danno calci alle porte delle celle durante la notte, rendendo impossibile dormire.
Le lotte carcerarie dei Repubblicani sono state per lungo tempo una caratteristica della vita nelle carceri britanniche, da Tom Clarke a Bobby Sand e i suoi compagni di Long Kesh, dalle donne repubblicane priginioere che subivano le strip search nella prigione di Armagh e Maghaberry agli uomini che subiscono la stessa tortura a Maghaberry oggi.

Maghaberry – the reality of strip-searching
The following article has been penned by imprisoned éirígí member Stephen Murney, currently held in Maghaberry prison. The information is correct at the time of publication.
On November 21st 2012, the Roe 4 Republican prisoners ended their long running protest in Maghaberry.
Just a few days later, on November 29th, I was arrested, taken to Antrim interrogation centre before being charged and then imprisoned in Maghaberry.
As many readers will be aware, there has been long and protracted campaign to bring about an end to the practice of forcible strip-searching. Below is my description of the degrading and humiliating process that Republican prisoners have to endure in Maghaberry Gaol.
When I arrived at Maghaberry I was brought to the “reception area” where I was photographed, had my personal details recorded and had my fingerprints taken. I was then informed of the procedure I would be expected to go through which included being strip-searched.
At this point I made it known that I would not be complying with the strip-search as it was degrading and humiliating for prisoners.
I was then taken and placed in a ‘holding cell’ and informed that I had 15 minutes to rethink my decision.
This ‘reflection period’ is solely designed as a psychological ploy to strike fear and worry into prisoners as they wait for what lies ahead.
During the 15 minute period, I see the riot squad gathering outside my cell glaring in at me in an attempt to intimidate me.
This particular riot squad is comprised of over half a dozen screws wearing black boiler suits, surgical gloves, heavy black boots and a utility belt around their waists with batons attached.
The cell door opens and I’m brought to the cell next door which is bigger in size. I enter the cell and sit on a wooden bench. I am then faced with the riot squad who file into the cell.
The screw in charge of the riot squad asks me if I have changed my mind regarding the strip-search. Once again, I tell him I won’t be complying with their degrading strip-search.
They bark at me to get up and I stand onto a mat which is situated on the floor in front of me. Two of the screws stand guard at the cell door – one is standing directly in front of me, two stand each side of me, one stands behind me and another stands in the corner and ‘observes’ the strip-search.
The screw standing in front of me grabs me by the face with both his hands while, simultaneously, the two screws each side of me grab my arms and stretch them outright forcing me to stand in a crucifix position. Both my wrists are forcibly twisted and bent backwards, causing extreme pain and discomfort.
I am forced onto my knees. As the screw in front pushes my face into the ground, the screw behind me then pulls both my legs from under me. I am now being held on the ground still in a crucifix position by four screws.
While I am held in this position my jumper is forcefully pulled off and thrown into the corner, my shoes and socks are the pulled off, next my jeans are very forcefully yanked down in a manner, which clearly, is only used to inflict pain on the prisoner. Lastly my underwear is pulled down.
I am now lying on the floor of the cell completely naked, humiliated and degraded. My clothes are lying in the corner of the cell. My face is throbbing, my wrists are aching and, while I am lying there naked, those responsible stand towering above me.
The riot squad then begin to leave the cell one at a time. I am still lying on the ground naked yet they demand that I do not look at them or get up off the ground until they leave the cell. One wonders what they fear from a solitary, naked and defenceless prisoner.
Now left alone, I get dressed, thinking about what has just happened.
Afterwards, I was taken to a committal wing where I was locked up 23 hours a day. I was held there for over a week until I was moved to the Republican wing on Roe 4.
When I enter Roe 4 the first thing that hits me is the smell. It hits me like a brick wall. Just a fortnight beforehand, Republican prisoners had just ended a “dirty protest” lasting 18 months.
When I am escorted onto the wing I notice the riot squad standing staring at me. This is the same riot squad who strip-search Republican prisoners on entering and leaving the gaol: the same riot squad who had stripped me just a week before.
The riot squad are based on Roe 4 every day of the week; several members of the riot squad surround me and escort me to my cell. This is my first experience of controlled movement which at times consists of several screws escorting one single prisoner.
As I enter my cell, the door is slammed shut behind me.
There is human excrement on the walls and ceiling. A poor attempt had been made to clean it by the prison authorities but it is clearly still there. At the time of writing this (late January), the excrement is still on the walls and ceiling. Eventually I am taken out to the yard where the rest of Roe 4 prisoners are gathered.
I receive a warm welcome by everyone, kind words and handshakes are exchanged. It’s clear that anyone unfortunate enough to find themselves incarcerated here will be made to feel very welcome by the Republican prisoners.
I am then updated on the current situation. I am told what the conditions were like when the prisoners were on protest and how they were locked up 23 hours a day in their excrement-covered cells. They tell me about the “dams” they had to put around the gaps in the doors to stop the urine flowing back into their cells. I also hear about the unmerciful beatings that prisoners received at the hands of the riot squad over the past few years. Long-haired, bearded Republicans beaten and dragged up and down the landing by screws. These could be stories and accounts form the time of the blanket protest, but they aren’t – these events are very much a part of the present day prison struggle in Maghaberry.
In a short period of time, I quickly learn that Roe 4 Republican prisoners are a disciplined, well organised body of men, working together to create a better, more humane environment for Republican prisoners.
Roe 4 is made up of Republicans of all ages and backgrounds. There are men who have previous gaol experience from being held in the H-Blocks of Long Kesh and Crumlin Road Gaol. There are young lads (and the not so young) who are experiencing their first taste of prison life.
Each day is a constant battle against the oppressive regime which is still in place.
Ordinary people may not see or hear about it but on a daily basis the Roe 4 prisoners are fighting against a draconian and inhumane system.
It is now over two months since Republican prisoners made the bold decision to suspend their dirty protest. Since then, however, no significant changes have been made to the regime under which they are held.
The prison riot squad based on Roe 4 seem determined to provoke conflict in order to try and push the prisoners back on protest. They are clearly a law upon themselves and have the power “on security grounds” to influence and even overrule decisions made at the highest level of the prison administration here in Maghaberry.
At the present moment the riot squad are refusing to accept phone credit lists from Roe 4 prisoners. This means that when our phone credit runs out we will have no way to contact our families apart from on our visits. They are also refusing to accept our weekly fruit lists and due to further vindictiveness our access to various facilities has been restricted. An example of this is the decision by the riot squad to restrict our access to exercise facilities.
Degradation and humiliation of prisoners is rife by the prison authorities in Maghaberry. Controlled movement remains in place. At times only one prisoner is allowed onto the landing at a time. If you need to go to the shower, several members of the riot squad escort you to the shower room. It’s the same if you need to go to the laundry room or back to your cell.
There are other forms of vindictiveness such as depriving prisoners of sleep. Throughout the night and early hours the screws open the flap in the cell door and shine a torch in your face before slamming the flap shut. They also regularly bang and kick cell doors during the night making it impossible to sleep.
Prison struggles by Republicans have long been a feature of life within British prisons, from Tom Clarke to Bobby Sands and his comrades in Long Kesh, from the Republican women prisoners who suffered strip searches in Armagh and Maghaberry gaols, to the men who suffer the same torture in Maghaberry today.
