Strabane: 756 “stop and search” in tre mesi
Police use stop and search 756 times in Strabane
The police used stop and search powers 756 times in Strabane between April and June this year, according to new PSNI figures.
No arrests were made as a result of the searches.
The chairman of Strabane District Council, Brian McMahon, said it “looks like a very over-zealous approach by the PSNI“.
In a statement, the police said the period in question was a time of “heightened security concerns”.
Mr McMahon said he was concerned the use of stop and search sent the wrong message to the community in Strabane.
“The vast majority of people in Strabane would be opposed to any activities by any organisation, but at the same time this number of stops does not bode well for policing in Strabane.”
