Riferisce un portavoce della polizia che ieri sera a Strabane c’è stato un attacco contro dei poliziotti
Gordon McCalmont, soprintendente della PSNI, ha detto: “In questo momento riteniamo che un dispositivo sia esploso mentre la polizia stava pattugliando la zona di Townsend Street poco dopo 20:30.
“L’indagine è in una fase iniziale e abbiamo dovuto chiedere ad alcuni residenti a lasciare le loro case, mentre svolgiamo le nostre indagini. Mentre non siamo in grado di parlare nello specifico dell’incidente, posso dire che siamo fortunati a non avere vittime dopo l’attacco di ieri sera.
“Apprezziamo la comprensione e la pazienza mostrata dagli abitanti della zona mentre svolgiamo le nostre indagini e faccio appello a chiunque abbia informazioni su attività sospette nella zona a contattarci”.
La polizia ha eretto cordoni di sicurezza e questa mattina non era possibile entrare a Strabane attraverso Liskey Road. La strada dovrebbe rimanere chiusa fino all’ora di pranzo.
Device exploded while police were on patrol
A POLICE spokesperson has said that an attempt was made to kill police officers in Strabane last night.
Superintendent Gordon McCalmont said, “At this time our assessment is that a device exploded while police were on patrol in the area of Townsend Street shortly after 8.30pm.
“The investigation is at an early stage and we have had to ask some residents to leave their homes while we carry out our enquiries. While we are unable to go into specifics of the incident at this stage, I am confident in saying that we are incredibly lucky that the lives of officers and other members of the community were not lost last night.
“We appreciate the understanding and patience of local residents while we carry out our enquiries and would appeal for anyone with information about suspicious activity in the area to contact us.”
Cordons have been put in place and there is currently no access to the town via the Liskey Road. Police have said the road is expected to remain closed until lunchtime.
