“Un deliberato tentativo di uccidere dei poliziotti”. Così la polizia commenta l’attacco di sabato sera
Una pipe bomb è stata lanciata contro una pattuglia di polizia nel quartiere di Ballycolman a Strabane, intorno alle 20:30 di sabato.
Una persona ha quindi spostato l’ordigno in un’area piena di immondizia in un’ex fabbrica.
Durante l’allarme sicurezza gli artificieri dell’esercito sono intervenuti per analizzare la pipe bomb.
Dopo un’esplosione controllata, gli artificieri hanno riferito che si trattava di un ordigno in grado di esplodere.
L’allarme è terminato alle 3 della notte di domenica.
L’Ispettore Capo Andy Lemon ha affermato: “Questo non si è trattato solo di un tentativo deliberato di uccidere degli agenti di polizia ma un attacco contro la comunità di Strabane e siamo stati fortunati che nessuno – poliziotto o civile – sia rimasto seriamente ferito.
“Se l’ordigno fosse esploso avrebbe potuto uccidere e ferire gravemente chiunque si fosse trovato nelle vicinanze.
“Voglio ringraziare i residenti del quartiere di Ballycolman e l’intera comunità per la pazienza e il sostegno mostrato durante questa operazione e voglio riassicurare loro che non ci faremo intimidire da questo attacco.
“Continueremo a fornire il servizio professionale e protettivo che la stragrande maggioranza degli abitanti di Strabane vuole ricevere.
“Faccio appello ad eventuali testimoni di telefonare agli investigatori.
“Se invece qualcuno vuole farsi aventi in maniera anonima, allora può chiamare Crimestoppers”.
Il consigliere SDLP Patsy Kelly ha condannato il lancio della pipe bomb.
“I responsabili hanno provocato grande disagio e confusione.
“Questa è una zona abitata e la gente di questa comunità non vuole vedere questo genere di attività.
“Ringrazio la PSNI per aver vigilato e per la loro professionalità”.

Pipe bomb thrown at police patrol
The PSNI has said a device thrown at a patrol in Strabane was a “deliberate attempt to kill police officers”.
A pipe bomb was thrown at a police patrol in the Ballycolman estate just before 8.30pm on Saturday.
A member of the public then lifted the device and moved it to an area of waste ground in a former factory site.
In the resulting security alert, army bomb disposal experts were dispatched to the scene to examine the device.
Following a controlled explosion, the item was declared a viable pipe bomb type device.
The alert ended just before 3am on Sunday.
Chief Inspector Andy Lemon, area commander for Strabane said: “This was not only a deliberate attempt to kill police officers but was an attack on the community of Strabane, and it is very fortunate that no-one, either police or civilian was seriously injured last night.
“Had this device exploded it could have killed or maimed anyone close by.”
“I would like to thank the local residents in the Ballycolman estate and wider community in the area for their patience and support throughout this operation and I want to reassure them that we will not be deterred by this attack.
“We will continue to deliver the personal, professional and protective service that the vast majority of residents in Strabane want to see.
“I would appeal to anyone with any information about this incident to contact detectives on 0845 600 8000.

SDLP councillor Patsy Kelly condemned the attack.
He said: “Those responsible for leaving a suspected pipe bomb have caused a great deal of disruption and chaos.
“This is a built up area and people in this community do not want to see this kind of activity.
“I want to commend the PSNI for their vigilance and professionalism.
“Anyone with information regarding this incident should come forward to the police as a matter of urgency.”
