La scoperta di una pipe bomb attiva nel percorso di golf a Strabane è stato descritto dalla PSNI come un tentativo di attirare lì i poliziotti
Lunedì mattina lo Strabane Golf Club è rimasto chiuso per diverse ore mentre la polizia e gli artificieri dell’esercito britannico mettevano in sicurezza l’area in Ballycolman Avenue.
La polizia, nel corso della serata di domenica, ha avvertito gli abitanti della cittadina di restare vigili perché era stata riportata la presenza di una pipe bombe nelle zone di Ballycolman Road e Laurel Drive. L’informazione è stata ricevuta dalla PSNI alle 22:30, ma nulla è stato trovato.
È stata quindi lanciata un’operazione che ha portato all’allarme sicurezza.
La pipe bomb è stata scoperta ad un incrocio tra due sezioni del percorso di golf.
L’Ispettore Capo Andy Lemon ha fatto sapere che l’ordigno aveva la capacità di provocare morte o gravi lesioni.
“In questo ordigno c’erano dadi e bulloni mischiati con esplosivo e inseriti nel tubo. Mentre la polizia è presumibilmente l’obiettivo dell’attacco i golfisti, personale del percorso o membri della comunità in transito nelle vicinanze potevano restare uccisi o mutilati” ha affermato il comandante della zona di Strabane.
“Questo porta i segnali di un tentativo di attirare la polizia nell’area. Ma è anche un attacco contro la comunità. Ritengo che la grande maggioranza degli abitanti di Strabane non vogliano questo genere di incidenti e gli domando assistenza per portare i responsabili davanti alla giustizia”.
L’allarme sicurezza è terminato alle ore 18.

Pipe bomb ‘attempt to lure officers’
The discovery of a viable pipe bomb at a golf course in Strabane has been described by the PSNI as an attempt to lure officers.
Strabane Golf Club was closed for several hours on Monday while the police and army bomb squad made the area safe at Ballycolman Avenue.
It comes after police in the Co Tyrone town issued a warning on Sunday night for local people to stay vigilant after a report of a pipe bomb in the Ballycolman Road/Laurel Drive areas. The information was received by the PSNI at 10.30pm, but nothing was found.
A follow-up operation led to a security alert being sparked.
The pipe bomb was found at a crossing between two sections of the golf course.
Chief Inspector Andy Lemon said the device had the capability of causing death or serious injury.
“This device comprised nuts and bolts packed with explosives into a pipe. While police may have been the intended target, golfers, ground staff or members of the community passing by could have been killed or maimed,” the Strabane area commander said.
“This bears the hallmarks of an attempt to draw police into the area. But this was an attack on the community as much as on the police. I believe that the vast majority of people in Strabane do not want this type of incident and I would call on them to give us their assistance in behind those behind it to justice.”
The security alert ended at 6pm and roads have been reopened.
