Le prove fornite da un “supergrass” (pentito) lealista potrebbero dare una svolta nella caccia agli assassini di un ex membro della RAF, è stato affermato in tribunale.
Il Coroner John Leckey ha rinviato il procedimento di inchiesta sulla morte del ventiduenne Raymond McCord Junior, avvenuta nel 1997 a North Belfast, per vedere se la testimonianza fornita dal Supergrass potrà portare a delle accuse.
Nel corso di una udienza preliminare a Belfast, un avvocato della polizia ha confermato che l’interrogatorio del lealista era vicino al completamento.
Il lealista starebbe fornendo indicazioni su una serie di crimini commessi dalla famigerata banda UVF di Mount Vernon, a North Belfast, che aveva pestato a morte McCord e poi aveva gettato il corpo in una cava di Newtownabbey.
Un avvocato della famiglia McCord ha affermato che questo potrebbe portare la polizia ad agire riguardo all’omicidio.
Dopo la denuncia dal padre della vittima, Raymond McCord Senior, che ha condotto una campagna di alto profilo per ottenere giustizia, un’indagine dall’ex Police Ombudsman Nuala O’Loan, pubblicata nel 2007, rivelò una collusione su larga scala tra la banda lealista e la polizia, che aveva agenti sotto copertura nella UVF.
L’Operazione Stafford della PSNI sta indagando sui crimini commessi dalla banda.
All’inizio di quest’anno, nove uomini, tra cui il presunto leader Mark Haddock, hanno visto decadere l’accusa per l’omicidio del boss UDA Tommy English, dopo un lungo processo in cui le prove fornite da altri due Supergrass – i fratelli David e Ian Stewart – sono state fortemente criticate dal giudice.
In quest’ultima udienza, i legali dei genitori di McCord, che erano presenti in tribunale, hanno spiegato a Leckey che volevano attendere la fine dell’inchiesta della polizia prima dell’avvio dell’indagine.
Paddy Murray, che rappresenta Vivienne, la madre di Raymond McCord, ha dichiarato: “Questo processo potrebbe sollevare problemi molto seri. Ne potrebbe derivare in futuro un processo penale. Sappiamo che l’indagine è in una fase abbastanza progredita”.
Supergrass move in McCord inquest
Evidence provided by a loyalist supergrass could see a breakthrough in the police hunt for the UVF killers of a former RAF member, a court has heard.
Coroner John Leckey has adjourned inquest proceedings into the 1997 death of 22-year-old Raymond McCord Jnr in north Belfast to see if testimony provided by the so-called “assisting offender” will prompt charges.
At a preliminary hearing in Belfast, a police lawyer confirmed that the process of interviewing the offender was near to completion.
It is understood he is providing state’s evidence on a range of crimes committed by the notorious UVF gang from north Belfast’s Mount Vernon estate that beat Mr McCord to death and dumped his body in a Newtownabbey quarry.
A lawyer for the McCords said this could prompt police action in regard to the murder.
On the back of a complaint by the victim’s father, Raymond McCord Snr, who has led a high-profile campaign for justice, an investigation by former Police Ombudsman Nuala O’Loan, published in 2007, revealed large-scale collusion between the gang and the police, which ran agents inside the UVF.
The PSNI’s Operation Stafford is currently probing crimes committed by the gang.
Earlier this year nine men, including alleged gang leader Mark Haddock, were cleared of murdering UDA chief Tommy English after a lengthy trial which saw evidence provided by two other supergrasses heavily criticised by the judge.
At this latest hearing, lawyers for Mr McCord’s parents, who were present in court, told Mr Leckey that they wanted to see the police investigation completed before an inquest was heard.
Paddy Murray, representing Mr McCord’s mother Vivienne, said: “That process could raise very serious issues. There may well be arising from that a criminal process in the future. We understand that investigation is fairly progressed.”
