Supergrass Trial: riprende a Belfast il dibattimento

Uno dei testimoni fondamentali del processo sarà di nuovo al banco dei testimoni nel tribunale di Belfast

Il trentasettenne Robert Stewart – che ha già confessato l’appartenenza alla UVF e di aver operato nel corso dell’omicidio del comandante UDA Tommy English – ha modificato la testimonianza iniziale fornita alla polizia contro 14 suoi presunti ex compagni terroristi.

L’ex leader UVF e agente dello Special Branch Mark Haddock – insieme ad altri 13 co-imputati – deve rispondere di molti capi d’accusa, legati principalmente all’assassinio di Tommy English del 2000.

Giovedì Stewart ha negato di aver premuto il grilletto nel corso dell’omicidio English, avvenuto durante una dura faida tra i paramilitari lealisti.

Durante l’udienza Stewart si è scontrato ripetutamente con l’avvocato difensore Frank O’Donague riguardo alle discrepanze rispetto a quanto comunicato originariamente alla polizia nell’agosto 2008, quando lui ed il fratello David Ian si consegnarono alla PSNI.

Supergrass trial resumes in Belfast

One of the main witnesses in the Supergrass Trial is due to take to the stand again at Laganside Courthouse in Belfast on Monday.

37-year-old Robert Stewart – who has already confessed to UVF membership and playing a role in the killing of UDA chief Tommy English, has turned Queen’s evidence against 14 of his alleged terrorist associates.

Former UVF leader and police agent Mark Haddock – plus 13 others – are standing trial at Belfast Crown Court on a litany of charges, many of them connected to the murder of Mr English in 2000.

On Thursday, Stewart denied being the UVF shooter responsible for the killing.

For a third day running Stewart clashed with defence QC Frank O’Donaghue, over discrepancies in what he originally told police in August 2008 when he and his brother Ian initially turned themselves in.
