Come parte dell’accordo Suzanne Breen aveva anche ricevuto delle scuse pubbliche e la ritrattazione di quanto affermato in precedenza dal National Union of Journalists (NUJ).
La Breen aveva avviato un procedimento per diffamazione dopo che la rivista del NUJ aveva pubblicato un articolo commentando la sua decisione di proteggere le fonti giornalistiche che sono dietro ai suoi pezzi sulla Real IRA.
L’articolo è comparso dopo la vittoria legale contro la polizia, avvenuta a giugno 2009. La PSNI cercò in tutti i modi di farsi consegnare le informazioni sull’organizzazione paramilitare repubblicana.
Una giuria presso l’Alta Corte di Belfast era stata istituita per ascoltare la sua azione contro il sindacato cui è iscritta da oltre 20 anni.
Ma dopo negoziati privati è stato comunicato al giudice che una risoluzione era stata raggiunta tra le parti.
Fuori dal trbunale la Breen ha affermato: “E’ stato molto stressante. Sono felice che tutto sia finito ed anche per il risultato”.

Suzanne Breen also received an apology and retraction as part of a settlement reached in her case against the National Union of Journalists (NUJ).
Ms Breen issued defamation proceedings after the NUJ’s magazine published a piece commenting on her stance on protecting sources in her stories about the Real IRA.
It appeared after she won a legal battle in June 2009 with the police seeking to make her surrender information on the dissident republican organisation.
A jury at the High Court in Belfast was set to hear her libel action against the union which she has been a member of for more than 20 years.
But following negotiations the judge was told a resolution had been reached.
Outside the court Ms Breen said: “It’s been an extremely stressful time for myself. I’m delighted it’s all over and very pleased with the outcome.”
