Svaniscono le speranze di un accordo

Alcuni parlamentari avrebbero minacciato di dimettersi dopo le proposte sul trasferimento di polizia e giustizia

L’incontro di ieri, quando il leader del partito ha esposto le proposte al gruppo assembleare del DUP, è stato definito “tempestoso” da Peter Robinson.

Non tutto il contingente DUP a Stormont ha partecipato all’incontro, ma la BBC ha affermato che 14 partecipanti hanno respinto le proposte. Anche alcuni parlamentari di Westminster, viene riferito, sarebbero tra i contrari.

Le scadenze per la conclusione dei colloqui sono continuamente slittate da venerdì scorso. Il governo britannico e quello irlandese avevano detto che avrebbero pubblicato le loro proposte per un nuovo sistema se non si fosse giunti ad un accordo lo scorso venerdì. Ciò non è accaduto e non è inteso che i colloqui potranno continuare fino alla fine di questa settimana.

L’ottimismo per il raggiungimento di un accordo sta svanendo, ma altri incontri tra DUP e Sinn Fein sono attesi.

Adesso i negoziatori dello Sinn Fein incontreranno la propria squadra di Stormont.

Entrambi i partiti hanno mercanteggiato sulla devolution dei poteri di polizia e giustizia per mesi.

Lo Sinn Fein vuole il trasferimento in blocco dei poteri. Il DUP, invece, afferma che il trasferimento avrà luogo quando ci sarà “fiducia della comunità” tra gli unionisti.

Ci sono stati problemi anche sulla questione delle parate.

Hopes fading on Policing and Justice deal

SOME DUP MLA’s threatened to resign over proposals on the devolution of Policing and Justice, it has been reported.

Yesterday’s meeting, where the proposals were put before the DUP’s Assembly team by party leader, Peter Robinson has been described as “stormy”.

Not all of the Stormont DUP contingent attended yesterday’s meeting, but the BBC have claimed that 14 of those in attendance rejected the proposals. It is also claimed that a number of the DUP’s Westminster MP’s were amongst those who are at odds with the proposals.

Deadlines for the conclusions of the talks have continually lapsed since last Friday. The British and Irish Governments said they would publish their proposals on a way forward on the issue if the deal had not been sealed by last Friday. That has not happened and it is not understood that the talks could continue on until the end of this week.

Optimism is fading that the deal can be rescued, but further meetings between the DUP and Sinn Féin are expected.

The Sinn Féin team is now expected to brief its Stormont team.

Both parties have been wrangling on the devolution of Policing and Justice for months.

Sinn Féin want the powers transferred at once. Yet, the DUP say the transfer will only take place when there is “community confidence” amongst unionists.

There have also been blockages on the issue of parading.
