L’unica parlamentare dell’Ulster Unionist Party a Westminster ha deciso di presentarsi alle elezioni come candidata indipendente
La rappresentante di North Down, Sylvia Hermon, aveva già ampiamente anticipato la partenza dall’UUP, dopo aver contestato il patto elettorale con il Conservative Party di David Cameron.
“E’ ora mia intenzione di proseguire, candidandomi alle prossime elezioni generali e cercando la vittoria” ha detto.
La Hermon aveva già dichiarato di non volersi presentare nella circoscrizione di North Down sotto alle insegne UUP/Tory e si era presa un periodo di tempo per decidere se presentarsi da sola.
Dopo aver criticato la decisione di legarsi ai Conservative, l’ex avvocato ha ance contestato la decisione dell’UUP di votare contro il trasferimento dei poteri su polizia e amministrazione della giustizia a Stormont.
Immensamente popolare nella forte circoscrizione unionista, la vedova dell’ex Chief Constable (Comandante della polizia) della Royal Ulster Constabulary, Jack Hermon, ha forti possibilità di mantenere il seggio.
“Mentre giungiamo alla fine di questo parlamento, con la pausa pasquale che inizierà martedì prossimo e con lo scioglimento previsto poco dopo, il mandato consegnatomi durante l’ultima elezione generale per servire la popolazione di North Down come parlamentare dell’Ulster Unionist è virtualmente giunto alla fine.
“La distanza, comunque, tra me ed il mio partito è divenuta così grande negli ultimi mesi che ho deciso di dimettermi dall’Ulster Unionist Party a partire dalla mezzanotte di ieri.
“Ho impiegato un considerevole lasso di tempo per pensare e riflettere, prima di giungere a questa decisione, me ritengo sia quella giusta per il partito e per me.
“Detto ciò, lasciare l’UUP mi causa profonda tristezza, e sono stata orgogliosa di lavorare per il partito a Westminster sin da quando divenni la sua parlamentare per North Down nel 2001”.
Il leader dell’UUP, Sir Reg Empey, ha espresso “profondo rammarico” per la decisione.
“Voglio ringraziarla per il contributo dato all’Ulster Unionism sin dalla sua elezione nel 2001”, ha affermato.
“Ritengo che i valori condivisi abbiano appianato le differenze nell’approccio verso alcune questioni.
“Le principali decisioni politiche del partito sono state raggiunte dopo una vasta consultazione e sono state unanime.
“Auguro a Lady Sylvia ed alla sua famiglia tutto il bene per il futuro”.

Hermon quits UUP to run as independent
North Down representative Sylvia Hermon’s widely anticipated departure from the UUP comes after she voiced opposition to the party’s electoral alliance with the Conservative Party.
‘It is now my intention to stand my ground, fighting the forthcoming general election as an independent and fighting to win,’ she said.
Mrs Hermon had already indicated that she would not stand in North Down under the joint UUP/Tory banner and had been taking a period of time to decide whether to go it alone.
As well as criticising the link-up with the Conservatives, the ex-lawyer has also hit out at the UUP’s decision to vote against the devolution of policing powers to Stormont.
Immensely popular in the strong unionist constituency, the widow of former Royal Ulster Constabulary Chief Constable Jack Hermon will have high hopes of retaining her seat.
She said: ‘As we approach the end of this parliament, with the Easter recess beginning next Tuesday and dissolution expected shortly thereafter, the mandate given to me at the last general election to serve the people of North Down as an Ulster Unionist is virtually at an end.
‘The distance, however, between me and my party has become so great over recent months that I have decided to resign from the Ulster Unionist Party with effect from midnight last night.
‘I have taken a considerable amount of time to think and to reflect before coming to this decision, but I believe it to be the right one for the party and for me.
‘That said, leaving the Ulster Unionist Party causes me profound sadness, as I have been proud to serve it at Westminster since first becoming its MP for North Down in 2001.’
UUP leader Reg Empey expressed his ‘deep regret’ at the decision.
‘I wish to thank her for her contribution to Ulster Unionism since her election in 2001,’ he said.
‘I believe that the values we share far outweigh the differences in approach to some issues.
‘The party’s major policy decisions have been reached after widespread consultation and have been unanimous.
‘I wish Lady Sylvia and her family well in the future.’
