La vittima, che non vuole dire il proprio nome, era stato avvisato dall’abbaiare del suo cane del pericolo rappresentato dal veicolo in fiamme nelle prime ore di mercoledì.
“La macchina era parcheggiata vicino alla porta sul retro – se l’auto fosse esplosa la casa sarebbe andata in fiamme”, ha detto.
La travagliata cittadina di nord Antrim, colpita da molti attacchi settari negli ultimi anni, è terrorizzata da elementi repubblicani, secondo la vittima.
“Sono già stato attaccato prima, insieme a mio fratello, da questa stessa banda.
“Le famiglie protestanti hanno dovuto lasciare la cittadina nel corso degli ultimi anni, e non si fermeranno fino a quando me ne andrò”.
Il sindaco di Ballymoney, John Finlay, lo ha descritto come “un plateale attacco settario per costringere un residente protestante a uscire da Rasharkin”.
“Negli ultimi anni la comunità protestante in Rasharkin è diminuita a causa di questa intimidazione repubblicana. Questo tipo di intimidazione deve cessare immediatamente”, ha detto il rappresentante del DUP.
Un portavoce della polizia ha detto che un movente settaria è una delle linee di inchiesta che seguivano nella loro indagine.
Nel frattempo, il leader del TUV Jim Allister ha espresso la sua condanna per i graffiti repubblicani dipnti su una Orange Hall recentemente ristrutturata vicino a Dunloy.
“E’ ancora la stessa belligeranza intollerante che plasma la mente repubblicana”, ha affermato il parlamentare di North Antrim.

Bid to burn out Rasharkin protestant
The victim, who does not wish to be named, was alerted by his dog’s barking to the danger posed by the burning vehicle in the early hours of Wednesday morning.
“The car was parked up close to the back door – if the car had exploded then the house would have went up in flames,” he said.
The troubled north Antrim village, which has been plagued by a catalogue of sectarian attacks in recent years, is being terrorised by dissident republican elements, according to the victim.
“I have been attacked before, along with my brother, by this same gang.
“Protestant families have had to leave the village over the last few years, and they won’t stop until I have to leave.”
Ballymoney mayor, John Finlay, described it as “a blatant sectarian attack to drive a Protestant resident out of Rasharkin”.
“Over the last number of years the Protestant community in Rasharkin has been dwindling as a result of this republican intimidation. This kind of intimidation needs to stop immediately,” the DUP representative said.
A police spokesman said a sectarian motive was one line of inquiry which they were pursuing in their investigation.
Meanwhile, TUV leader Jim Allister has voiced his condemnation of republican graffiti sprayed on a recently-renovated Orange Hall in nearby Dunloy.
“It’s still the same intolerant belligerence which shapes the republican mind,” the North Antrim MLA said.
