Third night of violence in Belfast

Ardoyne Riot | 12 07 2010

Petrol bombs have been thrown at police in north Belfast as violence breaks out for a third night.

Ardoyne Riot | 12 07 2010Officers came under attack at Brompton Park on Tuesday night, as groups of people gathered at the Ardoyne shopfronts and at Twaddell Avenue.

The Crumlin Road has been closed at Cambrai Street.

Youths have also blocked North Queen Street with a barricade across the road, while police are dealing with sporadic incidents in the Markets and Short Strand areas.

At Stewart Street, a bus has been damaged by stone throwers and an attempt has been made to hijack a car.

It comes after serious rioting erupted across the city – and in areas including Lurgan and Londonderry – on Monday night, following Twelfth of July parades.

More than 50 police officers were injured as they tried to restore calm.
