L’importante repubblicano Thomas “Slab” Murphy è stato ritenuto colpevole di aver evaso le tasse nella Repubblica d’irlanda.
Il sessantaseienne di Hackballscross, Contea di Louth, possiede una fattoria che oltrepassa il confine tra la Repubblica e le Sei Contee. Slab Murphy si è sempre dichiarato innocente.
Dopo 32 giorni di processo presso la Corte Speciale Criminale di Dublino, i tre giudici hanno dichiarato Slab Murphy colpevole per tutte le nove accuse.
L’accusa ha sostenuto che l’agricoltore non ha fornito alle autorità notizie su dati fiscali, profitti e utili dal 1996 al 2004.
Il giudice Paul Butler, che presiedeva il tribunale senza giuria, ha deciso di continuare il rilascio con la condizionale di Slab Murphy fino alla pronuncia della condanna.
“La corte è soddisfatta al di là di ogni ragionevole dubbio che, nel caso di ogni singola accusa, l’imputato è colpevole” ha dichiarato in aula.
La decisione sulla condanna sarà rivelata in aula il prossimo 12 febbraio.

Prominent Irish republican Thomas “Slab” Murphy has been found guilty of tax evasion.
The 66-year-old, from Ballybinaby, Hackballscross, Co Louth, a farm that straddles the border with Northern Ireland, denied nine charges of failing to comply with tax laws in the Irish Republic
Following a 32-day trial at the three judge Special Criminal Court in Dublin, Murphy was convicted on all nine charges.
The prosecution alleged the farmer did not furnish authorities with a return of income, profits or gains or the sources of them over eight years from 1996 to 2004.
Judge Paul Butler, presiding in the non-jury court, remanded Murphy on continuing bail ahead of sentencing.
“The court is satisfied beyond reasonable doubt that in the case of each of the individual accounts on the indictment the accused is guilty,” he told the court.
The sentencing issue will be mentioned in court on February 12.
