Tom Elliott è il quattordicesimo leader del partito unionista

L’agricoltore della Contea di Fermanagh, 46 anni, è il parlamentare per Fermanagh and South Tyrone presso la Northern Ireland Assembly. Sostituirà Sir Reg Empey alla guida del partito, con la promessa di ricollegare l’UUP alla propria base elettorale.

Ha sconfitto il rivale Basil McCrea, parlamentare di Lagan Valley, per 643 voti a 294 ell’incontro tenutosi a Belfast cui hanno partecipato quasi 1.000 delegati del partito.

Elliott ha ricordato: “Non possiamo tornare ad essere il partito leader nell’unionismo senza unanimità”.

Ha ringraziato il suo contendente McCrea, dicendo: “Certamente non cercherò di allontanare te ed i tuoi colleghi dal partito”.

Il nuovo leader dovrà cercare di ricompattare il partito dopo una dura corsa elettorale.

Ha aggiunto: “Ogni membro di UUP, a qualsiasi fazione appartenga, sostiene le basi, i principi, l’etica e le politiche di questo partito e questo è ciò che conta”.

McCrea ha riconosciuto la vittoria del rivale e ha detto che si tratta di una persona meravigliosa. “Gli auguro tutto il meglio per il futuro”, ha aggiunto.

Compito di Elliott sarà riconquistare i voti fuggiti verso il Democratic Unionist Party, dopo che in un decennio il numero di parlamentari di Westminster dell’UUP sono passati da 10 a zero.

Ha affermato che il party’s link-up with the Conservativespatto elettorale con il Conservative Party – non avendo portato alcun parlamentare per Westminster – è giunto alla fine e ha concluso che non ci sarano patti elettorali con il DUP.

Tom Elliott has become the 14th leader of the Ulster Unionist Party.

The Co Fermanagh farmer, 46, represents Fermanagh and South Tyrone in the Northern Ireland Assembly and will take over from Sir Reg Empey with a promise to reconnect with party grassroots.

He defeated rival Basil McCrea, who represents Lagan Valley in the Assembly, by 643 votes to 294 following a party meeting in Belfast at which around 1,000 delegates gathered.

Mr Elliott said: “We cannot become the leading party in unionism again without unanimity.”

He paid tribute to his opponent Mr McCrea, saying: “I will certainly not make this a cold house, a cold party for you and your colleagues.”

The new leader will have to bring the party together after an at times acrimonious race.

He said his defeated opponent had at times annoyed him, but added: “Every member of this party, whatever wing they belong to, provided they support the basis, the principles, the ethos and policies of this party that is what is important.”

Mr McCrea acknowledged the victor’s campaign and said he was a wonderful person. “I wish him really well in the future,” he added.

Mr Elliott will have to win back votes from the Democratic Unionist Party after a decade in which the UUP has gone from having 10 MPs to none.

He said the party’s link-up with the Conservatives which failed to win a Westminster seat is at an end and added there will be no electoral pact with the DUP.
