Per il leader unionista è tempo che la Repubblica d’Irlanda entri nuovamente nel Commonwealth. La proposta durante uno speciale dibattito a Stormont, per celebrare il Giubileo di Diamante per i 60 anni di regno di Elisabetta II
La visita ha suggerito una nuova relazione tra i due stati che sono “così vicini geograficamente ma sono a volte molto divisi in altre circostanze”.
“Questo potrebbe incoraggiare la Repubblica d’Irlanda a pensare alla possibilità di ritornare di nuovo nel Commonwealth“, ha spiegato Elliott ai parlamentari.
Era la prima visita in Irlanda di un regnante britannico sin dal 1922 ed il primo ministro nordirlandese Peter Robinson, che ha preparato la mozione, ha riconosciuto i servizi della Regina durante i 60 anni di regno.
“Sono convinto che chiunque il Irlanda del Nord rispetterà l’importante ruolo svolto da Sua Maestà la Regina in questo significativo lasso di tempo.
“Ha portato saggezza in situazioni difficili, sempre pronta a dare consigli a chi aveva ricevuto in udienza”, ha affermato.
Sebbene alcuni parlamentari dello Sinn Féin hanno assistito alla mozione, sono stati gli unici a non partecipare. Un silenzio descritto dal leader del TUV Jim Allister come “insensibile e grezzo”.
Il leader dell’SDLP, Alasdair McDonnell, ha aggiunto: “Dobbiamo tutti riconoscere che l’immagine di noi stessi e del nostro futuro cambia nel tempo e speriamo e riteniamo che sia per migliorarsi.
“La visita della Regina Elisabetta II a Dublino ed il lavoro della presidentessa McAleese è stato un altro importante passo avanti nel processo di riconciliazione tra le genti di queste isole”, ha chiosato McDonnell.
La Repubblica d’Irlanda ha lasciato il Commonwealth nel 1949 e da allora ha cercato di allinearsi all’Europa, entrando nel Mercato Comunitario con lo scopo di ridurre la dipendenza della nazione dalla Gran Bretagna. Il Regno Unito è ancora il principale partner commerciale della Repubblica.
La Regina dovrebbe visitare l’Irlanda del Nord nel corso dell’estate 2012, come parte delle celebrazioni per il Giubileo.

Republic ‘should join Commonwealth’
Ulster Unionist leader Tom Elliott says it is time for the Republic of Ireland to rejoin the Commonwealth, during a special debate in the Assembly, marking the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.
He added that the visit suggested a new relationship between two states that are “so close geographically but are maybe so apart in other circumstances”.
“It may actually encourage the Republic of Ireland to look at the possibility to rejoin the Commonwealth once again,” he told MLAs.
It was the first visit to Ireland by a British monarch since 1922 and First Minister Peter Robinson, who laid the motion, recognised the Queen’s service during her 60 years on the throne.
“I am convinced that everyone in Northern Ireland will respect the significant role played by Her Majesty the Queen over such a significant period of time.
“She has brought a wise head to difficult situations, always there to give sound counsel to those who have audiences with her,” he said.
Although some Sinn Féin MLAs did attend the motion, they were the only party not to take part, a silence described as “stony and churlish” by TUV MLA Jim Allister.

“We all must recognise that our [image] of ourselves and of our future changes in time and we hope and believe that that is for the better.
“The visit of Queen Elizabeth the second to Dublin and the work of President McAleese was another important step forward in a process of reconciliation between the peoples of these islands,” said Dr McDonnell
The Republic left the Commonwealth in 1949 and since then has sought to align itself to Europe, embracing the Common Market in a fashion aimed at reducing Ireland’s reliance on Britain. The UK is still the country’s major trade partner.
It is expected the Queen will visit Northern Ireland later this year during the summer as part of the Jubilee celebrations.
