Il nuovo Prisoner Ombudsman per l’Irlanda del Nord è stato appena nominato
L’ex ispettore legale Toni McGonigle entrerà in carica all’inizio di giugno, sostituendo l’attuale Ombudsman, Pauline McCabe.
Annunciando la notizia, il ministro della GIustizia David Ford ha affermato: “Il ruolo del Prisoner Ombudsman è impegnativo e vitale nel sistema della giustizia.
“La nomina di Tom McGonigle sosterrà il continuo sviluppo di questa importante posizione. Sono fiducioso che porterà la sua vasta esperienza e capacità nel ruolo, proseguendo l’eccellente lavoro del suo predecessore”.
McGonigle, 56 anni, è entrato nel Northern Ireland Probation Service (il servizio di libertà vigilate nordirlandese, Ndt) nel 1980.
Ha lavorato in diversi ambienti di custodia e comunitari.
Da quando è diventato Ispettore della giustizia penale nel 2003, ha guidato ispezioni sulla custodia di adulti e bambini, libertà vigilata, arresti domiciliari, protezione civile e contributo del settore del volontariato al sistema di giustizia criminale della regione.
Nel suo nuovo incarico, per il quale guadagnerà oltre 60.000 euro in un anno, avrà il compito di indagare le denunce dei prigionieri in Irlanda del Nord e dei loro visitatori, così come sui decessi in custodia.
Ford ha reso omaggio al suo predecessore: “Vorrei anche esprimere i miei sinceri ringraziamenti alla mediatrice uscente, Pauline McCabe, per il contributo significativo dato a questo ruolo.
“Nel corso del suo incarico, Pauline ha giocato un importante ruolo nel migliorare l’indipendenza e la professionalità dell’ufficio e il servizio carcerario ha ampiamente beneficiato delle sue indagini e raccomandazioni per il miglioramento. Le auguro ogni bene per il futuro”.

New Prisoner Ombudsman appointed
A new Prisoner Ombudsman for Northern Ireland has been appointed.
Former Criminal Justice Inspector Tom McGonigle will take up the role from the start of June, replacing outgoing Ombudsman Pauline McCabe.
Announcing the news, Justice Minister David Ford said: “The role of the Prisoner Ombudsman is a challenging and vital one in the criminal justice system.
“Tom McGonigle’s appointment will support the continued development of this important position. I am confident that he will bring his extensive experience and skills to the role and build on the excellent work of his predecessor.”
Mr McGonigle, who is 56, joined the NI Probation Service in 1980.
He has worked in a variety of custodial and community settings.
Since becoming a Criminal Justice Inspector in 2003 he has led on inspections of adult and child custody, probation, offender hostels, public protection and the voluntary sector’s contribution to the region’s criminal justice system.
In his new post, which pays £58,400 per year, he will be in charge of investigating complaints from prisoners in Northern Ireland and their visitors, as well as deaths in custody.
Mr Ford paid tribute to his predecessor: “I would also like to record my sincere thanks to the outgoing Prisoner Ombudsman, Pauline McCabe, for the significant contribution she has made to the role.
“In her time in office, Pauline has played a great part in enhancing the independence and professionalism of the office and the prison service has benefited greatly from her investigations and recommendations for improvement. I wish her well for the future.”
