Blair book puts Bloody Sunday in Belfast
Tony Blair’s memoirs may be one of the fastest-selling books in history, but it seems factual accuracy is not his strong point.
A glaring inaccuracy on page 165 of the former British prime minister’s memoirs describes Bloody Sunday as having happened in Belfast, not Derry.
Blair notes in the memoir: “To assuage Nationalist opinion and under pressure from the Irish, I also ordered an inquiry into the Bloody Sunday shootings in 1972, when British troops had opened fire on protesters in Belfast, killing a number of people.”
John Kelly, one of the relatives who campaigned for a new inquiry into Bloody Sunday, described the gaffe as “astonishing”.
“I find this incredible – Tony Blair set up a £200 million pound inquiry into what happened on Bloody Sunday and he doesn’t even know where the event took place? It’s astonishing.”
