Il famigerato killer lealista Torrens Knight è stato nuovamente arrestato a Coleraine e rimandato in carcere, rivela Utv
In seguito a questo fermo, il Segretario di Stato, Shaun Woodward, ha sospeso la sua licenza di rilascio anticipato nella serata di martedì.
Il killer lealista venne rilasciato nel 2000 in base all’Accordo del Venerdì Santo.
“Non esiterò a sospendere la licenzia di qualsiasi prigioniero rilasciato in base allo schema di rilascio anticipato voluto dal Sentences Act, introdotto in seguito alla firma dell’Accordo del Venerdì Santo, se, tramite le loro azioni, si dimostrano di essere divenuti un pericolo per la popolazione”, ha detto questa sera Woodward.
“La mia priorità è la sicurezza pubblica e l’interesse della comunità nel suo insieme. Non posso lasciare libero alcun individuo intento ad abusare dell’opportunità concessa di beneficiare del rilascio anticipato”, ha aggiunto.
Torrens Knight, 40 anni, era stato arrestato poco prima delle 19 e riportato nel carcere di Maghaberry.
Era stato condannato per 12 omicidi durante i Troubles, comprese le otto persone uccise nel massacro di Greysteel.
Era un membro della banda dell’Ulster Freedom Fighters che penetrò all’interno del bar Rising Sun, situato nella cittadina della Contea di Derry, la sera di Halloween 1993 ed aprì il fuoco.
Dopo il suo fermo per i due reati di aggressione e per comportamento contrario all’ordine pubblico di giovedì scorso, il parlamentare nazionalista dello SDLP, John Dallat, aveva chiesto la rescissione immediata della sua licenza di rilascio anticipato.
Knight, dice il suo avvocato, sta preparando l’appello contro il fermo.

Greysteel killer returns to jail
Notorious loyalist killer Torrens Knight has been re-arrested in Coleraine and sent back to jail, UTV can reveal.
Following his conviction, Secretary of State Shaun Woodward suspended his early release licence on Tuesday evening.
The loyalist killer was released in 2000 under the terms of the Good Friday Agreement.
“I will not hesitate to act to suspend the licence of any prisoner who was released under the Sentences Act early release scheme, introduced following the signing of the Good Friday Agreement, if, by their actions, they prove they have become a danger to the public”, Mr Woodward said on Tuesday evening.
“My priority is public safety and in the interests of the community at large. I cannot permit freedom to any individual intent on abusing the opportunity they have been given to benefit from the early release scheme,” he added.
Knight, 40, was arrested just before 7pm and returned to Maghaberry prison.
He was convicted of 12 terrorist murders during the Troubles, including those of eight people in the infamous Greysteel massacre.
He was a member of the Ulster Freedom Fighters gang that burst into the Rising Sun bar in the Co Londonderry village on Halloween in 1993 and opened fire.
Following his conviction on two counts of assault and one of disorderly behaviour last Thursday, East Londonderry SDLP MLA John Dallat had called for his early release licence to be rescinded as soon as possible.
Knight is to appeal against his conviction, his solicitor said last week.
