Tributo a Ervine, politico lealista

Un tributo a David Ervine, scritto da Seamus Heaney, viene messo all’asta per beneficenza

Il premio Nobel per la Letteratura Seamus Heaney, uno dei maggiori poeti viventi che scrivono in inglese, ha descritto Ervine come un uomo “esemplare” nel suo tributo personale.

“L’educazione, secondo quanto dice il poeta Robert Frost, cambia il piano di considerazione – e David Ervine sarebbe stato d’accordo”, ha scritto il poeta.

“Era un uomo straordinario del nostro luogo e della nostra pace, qualcuno che ha creduto che se ci fosse stata una giusta parola ci sarebbe stato un giusto modo, ed ha agito di conseguenza”.

L’evento di martedì sera (oggi, NdT), organizzato dalla David Ervine Foundation durante il Cathedral Quarter Arts Festival, presso il Black Box a Belfast, vedrà la presenza di cimeli sportivi e musicali, il cui ricavato andrà nelle casse della fondazione.

L’evento comprenderà anche il David Ervine Memorial Talk sul tema “La fine del conflitto attraverso il dialogo”.

Il discorso dello scorso anno fu tenuto dal senatore George Mitchell, ma l’oratore di quest’anno non è ancora stato annunciato.

Dawn Purvis, una dei membri della fondazione che divenne leader del Progressive Unionist Party dopo la scomparsa di Ervine, ha detto: “Siamo profondamente onorati che Seamus Heaney abbia scritto il proprio ricordo personale su David, che riassume l’uomo e gli obiettivi di questa fondazione. Speriamo di incassare molti soldi nella messa all’asta di questo pezzo – soldi che ci aiuteranno ad assistere in nostri giovani di entrambe le comunità”.

All’evento la fondazione assegnerà fondi per circa 36.000 sterline ad alcuni progetti riguardanti educazione, sport, musica, supporto (mentoring), costruzione di fiducia, costruzione di relazioni e un breakfast club.
Questa sarata vedrà la partecipazione dei locali cantanti e cantautori Eilidh Patterson, Gerry Creen e Anthony Toner.

La vedova di Ervine, Jeanette, ha detto: “Porteranno le loro canzoni, musica e aumenteranno la reputazione di questo eveto speciale.

“Sono riconosciuti per i loro testi meditati, che ti fanno riflettere. Scrivono canzoni che inviano un messaggio e ce lo fanno ascoltare”.

Spiegando il lavoro della fondazione, la signora Ervine ha detto: “Il nostro scopo quando abbiamo costituito questa fondazione è stato permettere ai figli svantaggiati ed ai giovani di sviluppare le proprie potenzialità – dar loro ua visione ed una possibilità per fare il loro meglio”.

Tribute to loyalist politician

A TRIBUTE to the late David Ervine, penned by Seamus Heaney, will be auctioned for charity.

Nobel Laureate Heaney, one of the greatest living English-language poets, described Mr Ervine as an “exemplary” man in his personal tribute.

“Education, according to the poet Robert Frost, changes the plane of regard – and David Ervine would have agreed,” he wrote.

“He was an exemplary man of our place and our peace, somebody who believed that where there was a right word there was a right way, and acted accordingly.”

Tuesday’s event, organised by the David Ervine Foundation as part of the Cathedral Quarter Arts Festival, in Belfast’s Black Box, will also see sporting and musical memorabilia auctioned to raise money for the foundation.

The event will also include this year’s David Ervine Memorial Talk on the theme “Ending Conflict Through Dialogue”.

Last year’s talk was given by Senator George Mitchell but this year’s speaker has not yet been announced.

Dawn Purvis, one of the foundation’s members and Mr Ervine’s successor as the leader of the Progressive Unionist Party, said: “We are deeply honoured that Seamus Heaney has penned his own personal tribute to David, which epitomises the man and the objectives of this foundation. We hope to raise a lot of money in auctioning this piece – money which will help us to assist our young people right across the communities.”

At the event, the foundation will award grants of about £36,000 to a number of projects covering education, sport, music, mentoring, confidence building, relationship building and a breakfast club.
The evening will also feature local singer/songwriters Eilidh Patterson, Gerry Creen and Anthony Toner.

Mr Ervine’s widow, Jeanette, said: “They will bring their songs, music and growing reputations to this special event.

“They are recognised by their thoughtful and thought-provoking lyrics. They write songs that deliver a message and make us listen.”

Explaining the work of the foundation, Mrs Ervine said: “Our aim in setting up this foundation is to enable disadvantaged children and young people to reach their full potential – to give them a vision and a chance to do their best.”
