La polizia sta indagando dopo la comparsa su Facebook di un’immagine che ritrae alcuni uomini a volto coperto, apparentemente armati, che sparano proiettili quale tributo per un repubblicano di West Belfast.
Le fotografie sono state pubblicate sull’account dell’Irish Republican Socialist Party – la cosiddetta ala politica dell’INLA (Irish National Liberation Army) – e mostrano alcuni uomini a volto coperto in una strada di Belfast con una fotografia di Harry O’Hara.
Harry O’Hara, del quartiere di Turf Lodge, è deceduto il 28 febbraio scorso ed è stato sepolto nel City Cemetery dopo una messa alla chiesa Holy Trinity.
Tra i necrologi per la morte di O’Hara spiccava quello di “Connor Huges, Cogús Republican Prisoners” proveniente dalla prigione di Maghaberry.
L’IRSP di Belfast ha pubblicato le foto su Facebook come “l’ultimo saluto al compagno Harry O’Hara”.
Hanno scritto: “Harry era un socialista repubblicano fedele e sarà sempre ricordato con onore e orgoglio dal Movimento Socialista Repubblicano”.
Le foto ritraggono degli uomini in abiti paramilitari accanto a candele e una foto di Harry O’Hara.
In una di queste immagini, un membro del gruppo solleva una pistola sopra la sua testa come per sparare in aria.
Le immagini sono state condannate dal consigliere SDLP Tim Attwood, che rappresenta la zona nel Consiglio Comunale di Belfast.
“Queste sono scene che appartengono al passato. Non ci sono scuse per vedere uomini a volto coperto per le strade della nostra città, non importa in quale contesto” ha spiegato.
“Questo è un atto sconsiderato e deve essere condannato da tutti”.
Una portavoce della PSNI ha detto: “La polizia è a conoscenza di immagini postate sui social network che mostrano colpi di arma da fuoco apparentemente sparati da un uomo a volto coperto a West Belfast. È in corso un’indagine sull’accaduto”.

POLICE are investigating after an image was posted online showing a masked man apparently firing shots in tribute to a republican in west Belfast.
Photographs posted on Facebook by the Irish Republican Socialist Party – the political wing of the INLA – show masked men posing on a street with a picture of Harry O’Hara.
Mr O’Hara, from Norglen Drive in the Turf Lodge area, died on February 28 and was buried in the City Cemetery earlier this month following Requiem Mass at Holy Trinity Church.
Among death notices expressing sympathy at Mr O’Hara’s passing was one from “Connor Hughes, Cogús Republican Prisoners” in Maghaberry jail.
The IRSP’s Belfast branch posted photos on Facebook of a “final salute to comrade Harry O’Hara”.
It said: “Harry was a loyal republican socialist and he will always be remembered with honour and with pride by the Republican Socialist Movement.”
The images show masked men dressed in paramilitary-style uniform posing beside candles and a photo of Mr O’Hara.
In one, a member of the group raises a gun above his head in a firing motion.
The images have been condemned by SDLP councillor Tim Attwood, who represents the area on Belfast City Council.
“These are scenes which belong in the past. There is no excuse for masked gunmen on the streets of our city, no matter what the context,” he said.
“This was a reckless act and should be roundly condemned.”
A PSNI spokeswoman said: “Police are aware of footage on social media showing shots apparently being fired by a masked man in west Belfast. An investigation is underway.”
