UDA completa il disarmo. A breve il comunicato ufficiale

Il più grande gruppo paramilitare nordirlandese, l’Ulster Defence Association, avrebbe completato la decommissioning.

I dettagli dovrebbero essere rivelati nell’incontro che si svolgerà a fine mattinata in un albergo di Belfast.

L’UDA, responsabile di alcune delle più gravi atrocità dei Troubles, aveva già provveduto a distruggere una ridotta quantità di armi.

Ha avuto molti contatti con l’Independent International Commission on Decommissioning (IICD), la Commissione indipendente che ha supervisionato anche allo smantellamento degli arsenali dei Provisional IRA e della Ulster Volunteer Force (UVF).

L’anno scorso la Commissione ha riferito di aver ricevuto assicurazioni dalle cinque “brigate” dell’UDA mainstream e dalla brigata di South-East Antrim riguardo al completamento delle operazioni di decommissioning (smantellamento delle armi, ndt) entro la fine del mandato dell’IICD, che avverrà il prossimo mese.

Nel rapporto dell’IICD si legge che negli incontri con le brigate paramilitari non ci sonostate divergenze nelle opinioni.

L’anno scorso il Segretario di Stato Shaun Woodward ha avvertito che la legge sul disarmo, che imponeva la data di scadenza a febbraio 2010, non sarebbe stata rinovata.

A giugno l’UDA aveva provveduto alla distruzione di una piccola quantità di armi.

UDA has ‘fully decommissioned weapons’

Northern Ireland’s largest loyalist paramilitary grouping, the Ulster Defence Association, is understood to have completed decommissioning.

Details of the decommissioning of weapons are expected to be revealed at a meeting today.

The UDA, responsible for some of the bloodiest atrocities during the conflict, has already put a small number of guns beyond use.

It has been engaging with the Independent International Commission on Decommissioning (IICD) for some time.

Last year the Commission said it was given assurances from the mainstream UDA’s five so-called “brigades” and the South East Antrim grouping that they would complete their decommissioning by the end of the IICD’s mandate next month.

The IICD report said it had met all the mainstream UDA’s “brigades” and was told there was no difference of opinion.

Last year Northern Ireland Secretary Shaun Woodward warned that legislation, which set a deadline of next month for the completion of decommissioning, would not be renewed.

A small quantity of weapons is understood to have been destroyed by the UDA last June.
