Ulster Unionist Party annuncia i candidati per Stormont

L’UUP ha selezionato i candidati per le elezioni del prossimo anno in tutte le circoscrizioni tranne una

Solo tre dei 29 nomi indicati sono donne.

Sandra Overend contenderà il seggio in Mid Ulster. Leslie McCaulay correrà a East Londonderry e Jo-Anne Dobson in Upper Bann.

L’ex leader del partito Reg Empey, il cui titolo nobiliare è stato annunciato la scorsa settimana, sarà nuovamente il candidato unionista a East Belfast.

Il ministro della Salute, Michael McGimpsey, cercherà di farsi eleggere a South Belfast. Basil McCrea, che ha perso la corsa per leadership del partito a inizio anno, sarà candidato nella circoscrizione di Lagan Valley.

Parlando a Stormont martedì, il leader del partito Tom Elliott ha detto: “Credo che questa lista di candidati offrae all’elettorato una miscela di gioventù ed esperienza, comprendendo una combinazione di volti nuovi e di membri già eletti in Assemblea.

“Confido che si mostreranno degni del sostegno della gente dell’Irlanda del Nord, nel maggio del prossimo anno”.

I candidati della circoscrizione di Foyle non sono ancora stati selezionati.

Ulster Unionists announce assembly election candidates

The Ulster Unionists have selected their candidates for next year’s assembly election in all but one of the eighteen constituencies.

Just three of the 29 names put forward are women.

Sandra Overend will contest a seat in Mid Ulster. Leslie McCaulay will run in East Londonderry and Jo-Anne Dobson in Upper Bann.

The party’s former leader Reg Empey, whose peerage was announced last week, is to stand again in East Belfast.

Health Minister Michael McGimpsey will run in South Belfast. Basil McCrea, who lost out on the party leadership earlier this year, will stand in Lagan Valley.

Speaking at Stormont on Tuesday, party leader Tom Elliott said: “I believe that this slate of candidates offers the electorate a blend of youth and experience, comprising as it does a combination of new faces and existing Assembly members.

“I am very confident that they will prove themselves worthy of the support of the people of Northern Ireland in May of next year.”

Candidates running in the Foyle constituency have not yet been selected.
