Mike Nesbitt stravince la consultazione interna al partito unionista, succedendo al leader uscente Tom Elliott
Il parlamentare di Strangford ha conquistato 536 voti, con un ampio margine su John McCallister, che ha ottenuto 129 preferenze.
I membri del partito hanno preso la loro decisione durante la conferenza annuale dell’UUP di sabato, esprimendo 665 voti. Ken Reid, giornalista politico di Utv, ha parlato di una “vittoria schiacciante” per Nesbitt.
“Questa sarà una delusione per chi appoggiava McCallister, ma è una vittoria significativa per Mike Nesbitt,” secondo Ken Reid.
Nel corso della riunione Nesbitt si è impegnato ad infondere un nuovo spirito tra le persone in Irlanda del Nord.
“Voglio che tutti in questo paese possano alzarsi la mattina con uno scopo. Voglio che questo partito si svegli con uno scopo”, ha detto.
“Voglio che diventiamo il partito scelto da ogni elettore pro-unione in Irlanda del Nord, compresi quelli che ancora dicono di volere un’Irlanda unita, ma in privato accettano che non esiste più una sola ragione per non godere della loro appartenenza al Regno Unito”.
Se eletto, John McCallister si era impegnato a rimuovere l’UUP dall’Esecutivo e formare un’opposizione ufficiale a Stormont.

Nesbitt becomes UUP leader
Mike Nesbitt has been named the new leader of the Ulster Unionist Party.
The Strangford MLA won with 536 votes, a convincing margin over John McCallister, who received 129 votes.
Party members made their decision at the UUP AGM on Saturday and with 665 votes cast, UTV’s Political Editor Ken Reid said it was a “landslide victory” for Mr Nesbitt.
“This will be disappointing for the McCallister camp but a significant victory for Mike Nesbitt,” Ken Reid.
At the meeting on Saturday, Mr Nesbitt pledged to instil a new spirit among people in Northern Ireland.
“I want everyone in this country to get out of bed with a sense of purpose. I want this party to wake up with a sense of purpose,” he said.
“I want us to reach out to become the party of choice for every pro-union voter in Northern Ireland, including those who still say they want a United Ireland, but privately accept there is no longer a single reason not to enjoy their continued membership of the United Kingdom.”
If elected, John McCallister had pledged to remove the UUP from the government and form an official opposition.
