La presidente irlandese uscente Mary McAleese ha onorato l’ultimo impegno ufficiale

Oggi ha inaugurato una serie di abitazioni in centro a Dublino destinate ai senza tetto.

Nel pomeriggio Mary McAleese lascerà la residenza ufficiale del presidente irlandese, insieme al marito Martin.

Domani il suo successore, Michael D Higgins, diventerà ufficialmente il nono presidente irlandese.

McAleese ha spiegato che i progressi compiuti in Irlanda del Nord nell’ultimo decennio sono stati uno degli aspetti migliori della sua presidenza.

“Voglio dire a tutti i miei amici in Irlanda del Nord che è stata una delle gioie più intense della mia vita, in questi 14 anni, vedere il grande rilascio nella società civile e negli organismi politici in Nordirlanda di così tanta amicizia repressa; vedere la pace nelle strade, è una gioia”, ha affermato.

Mary McAleese saluterà tutto il personale di Aras an Uachtarain prima di lasciare il palazzo in Phoenix Park dove ha vissuto per gli ultimi 14 anni.

Nelle ultime settimane ha tenuto alcuni ricevimenti per un gran numero di persone che l’hanno aiutata mentre era presidente.

Irish President Mary McAleese performs her final engagement

The outgoing Irish President Mary McAleese performed her final official engagement on Thursday.

She opened a new accommodation block for homeless men in Dublin city centre.

Mrs McAleese will move out of her official residence this afternoon along with her husband Martin.

She will formally relinquish her role as president on Friday when her successor, Michael D Higgins, becomes the ninth president of Ireland.

Mrs McAleese said the progress made in Northern Ireland over the last decade was one of the best aspects of her time as president.

“I just want to say to all my friends and family in Northern Ireland that it has been one of the greatest joys of my life, these 14 years, to see the huge release into civil society and body politic in Northern Ireland of so much repressed friendship, to see peace on the streets, it’s a joy,” she said.

Mrs McAleese will say goodbye to her staff at Aras an Uachtarain before leaving the residence she had lived in in Phoenix Park for the last 14 years.

Over the past few weeks, she held a number of receptions for large groups of people who have helped her while president.
