L’uomo è stato trattenuto in una stazione di polizia della città dopo essersi presentato spontaneamente ai poliziotti.
Nel frattempo la polizia sta indagando altri presunti attacchi razzisti nel Nord – avvenuti questa volta nel villaggio di Moygashel, Contea di Tyrone, durante il fine settimana. Case ed autovetture sono state danneggiate in tre attacchi separati.
La scorsa settimana 115 rumeni – tra cui 49 bambini – sono stati costretti a cercare rifugio in una chiesa a Belfast dopo aver subito un’aggressione.
Questa mattina due ragazzi – di 15 e 16 anni – sono comparsi in aula al Tribunale dei Minori, con accuse collegate ai disordini scoppiati durante una marcia anti-razzista tenutasi lo scorso lunedì in risposta agli attacchi contro gli immigrati est-europei nel sud della città.
Uno dei giovani deve rispondere anche di intimidazione contro gli abitanti di una delle abitazioni che i rumeni sono stati obbligati ad abbandonare.
La coppia, i cui nomi non sono stati forniti per motivi legali, hanno ottenuto il rilascio su cauzione prima di ricomparire in seguito in tribunale.
I rumeni sono attualmente ospitati in alloggi temporanei in un luogo segreto in attesa di valutare le opzioni.
L’aumento degli attacchi razzisti hanno provocato ripulsione in tutto il Nord ed i politici locali hanno puntato il dito contro gli ultimi attacchi avvenuti nella contea di Tyrone.
Il parlamentare dell’Ulster Unionist Tom Elliot ha chiesto la fine delle aggressioni.
“Dopo un susseguirsi di incidenti a Belfast la scorsa settimana la prospettiva di una deriva razzista che acquisti slancio e diffusione in altre parti della provincia profondamente preoccupante”, continua il politico.
“Chiunque voglia far parte di questa comunità, o di un’altra, ha il diritto di vivere in pace ed essere trattato con rispetto.
“La comunità dell’Irlanda del Nord non dovrebbe essere soggetto di attacchi contro stranieri o da parte di cittadini stranieri”.
Tomy Gallagher, parlamentare dell’SDLP, afferma: “Queste sono aggressioni vergognose contro una comunità, non solo contro la comunità dei cittadini dell’est Europa abitanti in South Tyrone, ma contro l’intera comunità.
“L’imitazione è una forma di lusinga, ma non c’è nulla di lusinghiero nel replicare i vergognosi e vili attacchi contro le case dei rumeni in South Belfast e mi auguro che la gente di Moygashel e Dungannon non stia dalla parte dei teppisti che agiscono in questo modo nelle loro zone.
“Sprono chiunque abbia informazioni di passarle alla polizia e pizzicarli sul fatto alla prima opportunità ed insegnare a questi criminali che questo è inaccettabile in qualsiasi parte della comunità”.
Sabato centinaia di persone hanno partecipato ad un altro raduno anti-razzista nel centro di Belfast.
Sindacati, chiese, partiti politici, Amnesty International ed anche la comunità zingara sono giunti a sostenere i rumeni.

Man arrested in connection with attacks on Romanians
The man was taken into custody at a police station in the city after presenting himself to officers inside.
Meanwhile, police are investigating alleged racist incidents elsewhere in the North – this time in the Co Tyrone village of Moygashel over the weekend. Homes and cars were vandalised in three separate attacks.
Last week 115 Romanians – including 49 children – were forced to seek refuge in a church hall in Belfast after being attacked.
Earlier today two teenagers – aged 15 and 16 – appeared in youth court in Belfast charged in relation to disturbances during an anti-racism march that was held last Monday in response to the targeting of the eastern European nationals in the south of the city.
One of the teenagers also faces a charge of intimidating residents in one of the houses where Romanians were forced to flee later in the week.
The pair, who can’t be named for legal reasons, were granted bail to reappear before the court at a later date.
The Romanians are currently in temporary accommodation at a secret location to assess their options.
The upsurge in racist attacks has provoked revulsion across the North and today local politicians hit out at the latest incidents in Co Tyrone.
Ulster Unionist Assemblyman for Fermanagh and South Tyrone Tom Elliott called for a halt..
“Following a succession of incidents in Belfast last week the prospect of racist thuggery gaining momentum and spreading to other parts of the province is deeply worrying,” he said.
“Everybody who wants to form part of this community, or any other, has the right to live in peace and be treated with respect.
“The Northern Ireland community should not be subject to attacks on foreign nationals or by foreign nationals.”
SDLP MLA Tommy Gallagher said: “These are disgraceful attacks on a community, not just the eastern European community of South Tyrone but the community as a whole.
“Imitation is a form of flattery but there is nothing flattering about replicating the disgraceful and cowardly attacks on Romanian homes in south Belfast and I would wish the people of Moygashel and Dungannon would rightly not stand for thugs acting like this in their area.
“I urge anyone with information about this to pass it to the police and nip this in the bud at the earliest opportunity and teach these criminals that this is unacceptable anywhere in our community.”
On Saturday several hundred people attended another anti-racism rally in the centre of Belfast.
Trade unions, churches, political parties, Amnesty International and even the traveller community gathered to support the Romanians.
