Un uomo di 42 anni è stato arrestato dalla polizia dopo la bomba ritrovata giovedì ad Armagh
E’ stato ritrovato un ordigno capace di esplodere, descritto come una “specie di mortaio orizzontale”, il cui scopo sarebbe stato uccidere dei poliziotti.
L’uomo è stato fermato nella zona di Armagh dai detective del Serious Crime Branch della PSNI. In seguito è stato trasferito presso la stazione di polizia di Antrim per rispondere alle domande degli investigatori.
Alasdair Robinson, comandante locale della polizia, ha ringraziato chi ha lanciato per primo l’allarme.
Si ritengono responsabili per l’incidente le formazioni repubblicane.
“Il livello di minaccia da parte dei dissidenti repubblicani di questa zona è molto alta”, dice il numero due dell’UUP Danny Kennedy.
“Credo ci sia un grave problema e spero che il comandante della polizia destinerà le risorse necessarie in quest’area per assicurare la sicurezza degli agenti della PSNI e la sicurezza generale della popolazione”.
Lo Sinn Fein ha detto a Utv che queste azioni non hanno il sostegno della gente.
“Secondo me la maggior parte della comunità in Armagh non sostiene questo tipo di azioni e hanno espresso questa opinione in molte occasioni”, riferisce Cathal Boylan, parlamentare shinner per Newry ed Armagh.
“Mi piacerebbe chiedere a queste persone come possano ritenere che azioni come queste facciano guadagnare il supporto della comunità”; ha aggiunto.
L’oggetto sospetto è stato messo in sicurezza dagli artificieri dell’esercito, i quali hanno confermato in seguito la pericolosità dell’ordigno, capace di provocare gravi ferite o addirittura la morte.
La bomba comprendeva un tubo ed un cavo di comando.

Man arrested over Armagh bomb
A 42-year-old man has been arrested by police following the discovery of a bomb in Armagh City on Thursday.
They found a viable explosive, described as a “horizontal mortar-type device”, which police said was intended to kill officers.
The man was detained in the Armagh area by detectives from the PSNI’s serious crime branch. He has been taken to Antrim police station for questioning.
District Commander Chief Superintendent Alasdair Robinson praised the member of the local community who first raised the alarm.
It is believed dissident republicans were responsible for the incident.
“The level of threat from dissident republican from this area is very high,” UUP Deputy Leader Danny Kennedy told UTV.
“I think there is very serious concerns and I hope very much that the Chief Constable will deploy the necessary resources to this area to ensure the safety of the PSNI officers and the general safety of the public.”
Sinn Fein told UTV there was no community support for this type of action.
“I think the broader community in Armagh does not support this type of action and they have expressed their opinion on many occasion”, Sinn Fein MLA for Newry and Armagh Cathal Boylan said.
“I would like to question those people as to how they feel actions like this would gain the support of the community,” he added.
The suspicious device was made safe by Army technical officers, who later confirmed it was a viable explosive capable of causing serious injury or death.
The bomb is thought to have included a pipe and a command wire.
