Uomo accusato per omicidio di membro RUC nel 1981

Un uomo di 54 anni è stato accusato per l’omicidio di un agente riservista della RUC da parte dell’IRA avvenuto quasi 30 anni fa

L’uomo è stato anche accusato di possesso di arma da fuoco, riferisce un portavoce della polizia.

John Proctor, 25 anni, aveva appena visitato sua moglie ed il figlio appena nato nell’ospedale di Magherafelt, quando fu ucciso nel parcheggio. Era il mese di settembre del 1981.

Proctor era nella Riserva della RUC da due anni.

Poche ore prima di cadere nell’agguato, Proctor aveva portato a spalla la bara al funerale di un soldato dell’Ulster Defence Regiment suo amico, colpito a morte dall’IRA nella cittadina di Maghera, solo due giorni prima.

Il cinquantaquattrenne fermato è stato trattenuto nella zona di Swatragh lunedì mattina dai detective del Serious Crime Branch della PSNI.

E’ comparso in aula presso la Londonderry Magistrates Court nella mattina di martedì.

Man charged with RUC murder

A 54-year-old man has been charged with the IRA murder of an RUC Reserve Constable in Co Londonderry almost 30 years ago.

The man has also been charged with possession of a firearm with intent, a police spokesman has said.

John Proctor, 25, had just visited his wife and their newborn baby son in the Mid-Ulster hospital in Magherafelt, when he was shot dead in the car park in September 1981.

He had been in the RUC Reserve for two years.

Just hours before he was ambushed, Constable Proctor had been a pallbearer at the funeral of a UDR soldier friend shot dead by an IRA gunman in a neighbouring village of Maghera two days earlier.

The 54-year-old man was detained in the Swatragh area on Monday morning by detectives from the PSNI’s Serious Crime Branch.

He will appear before Londonderry Magistrates Court on Tuesday morning.
