Uomo incarcerato per insulti a Massereene Barracks

Man jailed over Massereene taunt

Massereene barracks, AntrimA man who taunted the family of a soldier shot dead outside Massereene Barracks has been jailed for five months.

Glen Dowd (22), from The Meadows in Randalstown, shouted paramilitary slogans at Sapper Patrick Azimkar’s family as they paid their respects at the scene of his murder.

Mr Azimkar was killed alongside Mark Quinsey in the attack outside Massereene Barracks in March.

Antrim Magistrates Court was told that Dowd shouted “up the Ra” as he drove past the grieving family on March 10, three days after the 21-year-old died in a hail of bullets.

Dowd was alleged to have wound down the window of a vehicle passing the entrance and shouted the slogan before driving away.

He returned the following day, March 11, and shouted the same slogan at the barracks.

However, he was traced by police and arrested on charges of disorderly behaviour.

The court was told that during police interviews, Dowd had “smirked” and showed no sign of remorse.

A defence solicitor said Dowd, a former bank employee, did not support any paramilitary organisations or hold any political affiliations and could provide no explanation for his actions.

Bail was refused pending an appeal.
