UUP conferma le dimissioni di Reg Empey

Il presidente dell’Ulster Unionist Party ha confermato che Sir Reg Empey si dimetterà dalla guida del partito

David Campbell ha detto di aver ricevuto la “comunicazione formale” da Reg Empey e che un incontro per l’elezione del nuovo leader si avrà il prossimo 22 settembre.

Sir Reg ha affermato di voler dimettersi in anticipo a causa del deludente risultato nelle elezioni generali per Westminster. Resterà alla guida del partito fino alla scelta di un nuovo leader.

Le candidature per la scelta della nuova guida dovranno essere fatte entro il 31 agosto.

Campbell afferma che il periodo trascorso con Empey alla guida ha visto “la riforma e la modernizzazione” del partito.

“Come capo negoziatore durante gli All-Party Talks ha negoziato la soluzione che ha portato alla pace e al governo stabile che abbiamo oggi”, ha affermato.

“Come ministro del DETI (Department of Enterprise, Trade and Investiment) prima e del DEL (Department for Employment and Learning) poi ha protetto e promosso la nostra economia sia nella regione che all’estero, ed è sempre stato un partner costruttivo nell’Esecutivo nordirlandese“.

UUP confirms Sir Reg to resign

The chairman of the Ulster Unionist Party has confirmed that Sir Reg Empey is to resign as party leader.

David Campbell said he had received “formal communication” from Sir Reg and that a meeting to elect a new leader would be held on 22 September.

Sir Reg said he would resign earlier following disappointing results in the general election. He will remain leader until the selection of a new leader.

Nominations for those wishing to be leader must be submitted by 31 August.

Mr Campbell said Sir Reg’s time as leader had seen “reform and modernisation” of the party.

“As the party’s chief negotiator during the All-Party Talks he negotiated the settlement that has led to the peace and stable devolved government that is enjoyed today,” he said.

“As a minister at DETI and then at DEL he has been forward in protecting and promoting our economy both at home and abroad, and has always been a constructive partner in the Northern Ireland Executive.”
