Il discorso è stato fatto davanti a un piccolo gruppo di Giovani Unionisti nella serata di sabato ed è stato preso da Nesbitt come un attacco alla sua leadership.
Resta inteso che Nesbitt ha parlato a McCallister – sconfitto a marzo durante la corsa per la leadership dell’UUP – nel fine settimana prima di incontrarlo la mattina di lunedì per comunicargli di averlo rimosso a causa del discorso.
Dopo tale riunione, in una e-mail inviata ai parlamentari del partito, il Segretario Generale dell’UUP Colin McCusker ha detto che la posizione del vice leader è stata rivisto.
Nella e-mail si leggeva: “Il leader del partito sarà a Manchester lunedì 1 e martedi 2 ottobre in occasione della conferenza del partito laburista.
“Condurrà un mini rimpasto della squadra assembleare che annuncerà al suo ritorno nel corso della settimana.
“Ha già deciso di liberarei la posizione di vice leader del gruppo dell’Assemblea in attesa di una revisione di questo incarico”.
McCallister venerdì sera non era presente nella cena per il centenario dell’Ulster Covenant organizzata da DUP e UUP – perché, ha affermato, doveva curare i sue due figli piccoli.
È parso frustrato dalle dichiarazioni congiunte, dalle foto e dalla cena con il DUP, il maggior partito unionista rivale giunte dopo le critiche rivolte al partito del primo ministro Peter Robinson nel corso della conferenza della settimana precedente.
Nesbitt ha rifiutato di mettere da parte il candidato del partito nelle prossime elezioni suppletive nel Mid-Ulster, dicendo solamente che ci sarà un candidato con “i valori dell’Ulster Unionist”.
Questa settimana il leader UUP ha rilasciato due dichiarazioni congiunte con Robinson, ha partecipato alla Commissione Parate con il leader del DUP ed è stato fotografato con lui prima della cena congiunta per ricordare l’Ulster Covenant.
Questi sviluppi hanno turbato diversi membri dell’UUP che si oppongono fermamente all’avvicinamento al DUP del proprio partito.
Nel discorso di sabato sera, McCallister ha detto che era “una delusione … la conclusione degli osservatori, secondo cui l’UUP sta deambulando verso l’unità unionista”.
“L’elenco quasi quotidiano di iniziative condivise con il DUP – commemorazioni condivise, comunicati stampa condivisi, eventi condivisi, dichiarazioni condivise – hanno costruito la sgradevole impressione che il treno verso “l’unità unionista” ha lasciato la stazione.
“Nella cabina di guida un certo P Robinson mostra un largo sorriso, deliziato dalla presenza dell’UUP come passeggero”.
Secondo McCallister molti nell’UUP vedono la prospettiva di unità unionista come “un tradimento profondo e un rifiuto dei valori del Covenant”.

Nesbitt sacks deputy McCallister
The speech, revealed in Saturday’s News Letter, was made to a small group of Young Unionists on Saturday night and is understood to have been taken by Mr Nesbitt as an attack on his leadership.
It is understood that Mr Nesbitt spoke to Mr McCallister — who he defeated by a margin of five to one to become UUP leader in March — over the weekend before meeting him just after 9am this morning to say that he was being removed because of the speech.
After that meeting, in an email to the party’s MLAs this morning, UUP General Secretary Colin McCusker said that the position of deputy leader was reviewed.
The email said: “The party leader will be in Manchester at the Labour Party Conference on Monday 1 October and Tuesday 2 October.
“He will be conducting a mini reshuffle of the Assembly Team which he will announce on his return later this week.
“He has already decided to stand down the position of deputy leader of the Assembly Group pending a review of this post.”
Mr McCallister was absent from Friday night’s joint DUP-UUP Ulster Covenant centenary dinner — because, he said, he was looking after his two young children.
He appeared to have been frustrated that his party’s criticisms of the DUP at its conference a week earlier had been undermined by a series of joint statements, photo opportunities and a dinner with the UUP’s larger rival.
Mr Nesbitt has refused to rule out standing aside in the upcoming Mid-Ulster by-election, saying only that there would be a candidate with “Ulster Unionist values”.
This week he had issued two joint statements with Mr Robinson, attended the Parades Commission with the DUP leader and been photographed with him ahead of last night’s joint dinner.
Those developments have unsettled several UUP figures who are bitterly opposed to their party coming closer to the DUP.
In Saturday night’s speech, Mr McCallister said that it was “disappointing…that reasonable observers are concluding that the UUP is sleepwalking into ‘unionist unity'”.
“The recently almost daily diet of shared initiatives with the DUP – shared commemorations, shared press releases, shared events, shared statements – has built up the unfortunate impression that the ‘unionist unity’ train has left the station.
“In the driver’s cab a certain P Robinson is smiling broadly, delighting that he appears to have the UUP as a passenger.”
Mr McCallister said that for many in the UUP the prospect of unionist unity “represents a profound betrayal and rejection of the values of the Covenant”.
