Il parlamentare di Strangford ha lasciato il gruppo assembleare dell’UUP ma è rimasto iscritto al partito dopo essere stato sanzionato da Tom Elliott per i suoi colloqui segreti con il DUP.
Da allora McNarry ha lanciato una serie di attacchi pubblici contro la leadership di Elliott e adesso dovrà affrontare dei provvedimento disciplinari.
Alla domanda su cosa farà nei confronti del veterano dell’UUP, McCallister ha risposto: “Dato il suo comportamento, se diventerò leader, mi piacerebbe espellerlo”.
“È stato una figura negativa per anni, in particolare per il modo in cui trattava Tom Elliott”.
Quando al candidato rivale di McCallister, Mike Nesbitt, la scorsa settimana gli è stata posta la stessa domanda ha detto che non avrebbe potuto rispondere a causa del processo disciplinare in corso.
Saputa la notizia, McNarry ha prontamente risposto: “John dovrebbe concentrarsi sulla sua competizione elettorale.
“Come membro del partito da oltre 40 anni, non prendo lezioni dai principianti”.
E il ribelle dell’UUP ha aggiunto: “Le sue osservazioni sono scurrili e rivelano una parte del malessere dell’operare contro i veri valori tradizionali dell’unionismo dell’Ulster, che io rappresento.
“Cerco di preservare la mia integrità – non ho possibilità di rispondere alle accuse ingiuste mosse contro di me, che mi hanno causato profondo dolore e mi hanno obbligato ad un’udienza disciplinare.
“Ho intenzione di arrivare alla fine della questione”.
Il prominente orangista ha aggiunto: “John dovrebbe ricordare che il prossimo leader dell’UUP dovrebbe essere un unificatore, accettabile per tutto il partito.
“Non c’è modo, se ho capito bene, che un nuovo leader mi possa espellere fino a quando le procedure disciplinari sono state completate e se, come mi aspetto, il risultato sarà in mio favore allora John McCallister avrà fatto, ancora una volta, il passo più lungo della gamba”.

Threat to expel rebel McNarry
The Strangford MLA quit the UUP Assembly group but stayed as a party member after being disciplined by Tom Elliott over secret talks with the DUP.
Mr McNarry then launched a blistering public attack on Mr Elliott’s leadership and he is now facing disciplinary proceedings.
Asked what he would do about the UUP veteran, Mr McCallister said: “Given how he’s behaved, I’d expel him if I was leader.
“He’s been a liability for years and particularly over the way in which he treated Tom Elliott.”
When Mr McCallister’s leadership rival, Mike Nesbitt, was asked the same question last week he said that he could not comment because of the disciplinary process.
Last night Mr McNarry hit back, saying: “John should concentrate on his election contest.
“As a member of the party for over 40 years, I take no lectures from novices.”
And the rebel UUP man added: “His remarks are scurrilous and reveal part of the malaise working against the true traditional values of Ulster Unionism which I represent.
“I am intent on preserving my integrity — I have no case to answer on the wrongful allegations made against me which caused me deep hurt and have put me into a disciplinary hearing.
“I intend to see that scenario out.”
The senior Orangeman added: “John should remember that a future UUP leader should be a unifier, acceptable to the broad party.
“There is no way, as I understand it, that a new leader can expel me until the disciplinary proceedings are completed and if, as I expect, they find in my favour then John McCallister will once again have bitten off more than he can chew.”
