Una veglia di pace è stata tenuta a Newry per protestare contro l’esplosione di un’autobomba fuori dal tribunale cittadino avvenuta lunedì
I consiglieri locali hanno aiutato ad organizzare il raduno presso la Town Hall.
Peter McAovy era tra il centinaio di persone che hanno preso parte al servizio. Si è detto disgustato dalle recenti attività dei repubblicani.
“Francamente pensavamo di aver visto la fine di tutto questo, non sappiamo chi rappresentino queste persone, ma certamente non rappresentano la gente di Newry” ha affermato.
“Ero in questo punto cinque anni fa, in circostanze similari, fortunatamente le circostanze questa volta non sono tragiche come allora”, ha aggiunto.
La polizia stava evacuando la zona, lunedì sera, quando l’autobomba è esplosa.
Lo scoppio ha causato seri danni al tribunale, pesantemente fortificato, e alla vicina Downshire Road Presbyterian Church.
I repubblicani vengono ritenuti responsabili per la bomba da 115 chilogrammi. Per la polizia è “un miracolo” che nessuno è rimasto ucciso dalla deflagrazione.
L’attacco di Newry ha impiegato la più grande quantità di esplosivo dallo scoppio della bomba di Omagh nel 1998.

Vigil held after Newry bomb
A peace vigil has been held in Newry in protest against a car bomb which exploded outside the court house on Monday.
Local councillors helped to organise the rally at the Town Hall.
Peter McAvoy was one of up to 100 people who took part in the service, he said he is disgusted by the recent activity of dissidents.
“Quite frankly we thought we had seen the end of this, we don’t know who these people represent but they certainly don’t represent the people of Newry” he said.
“I stood in this spot twenty five years ago, very similar circumstances, fortunately the circumstances this time were not as tragic as then” he added.
Police were in the process of evacuating the area on Monday night when the car exploded.
The explosion caused substantial damage to the heavily fortified courthouse and the nearby Downshire Road Presbyterian Church.
Dissident republicans have been blamed for the 250lb bomb. Police said it was a “miracle” no-one was injured or killed in the explosion.
The Newry attack is thought to be the first time a large car bomb has exploded in Northern Ireland since the Real IRA bombing of Omagh in 1998.
