Circa cinquecento persone hanno partecipato a una veglia nella zona ovest di Belfast per mostrare il sostegno alle famiglie in lutto per il suicidio di un loro caro
L’evento è stato organizzato da due giovani della zona, per pubblicizzare l’aiuto che è disponibile.
Sperano di stabilire un contatto più immediato tra i professionisti della salute mentale e coloro che hanno bisogno del loro aiuto.
Uno degli organizzatori, Nuala Ni Scoilain ha detto il suicidio è una “soluzione permanente ad un problema temporaneo”.
“Ci sono persone che vogliono aiutare e gente che deve solo andare e prendere l’aiuto che viene fornito,” ha detto.
“Abbiamo intenzione di fare tutto il possibile e lo faremo in memoria di coloro che non hanno ottenuto l’aiuto di cui avevano bisogno.
“Abbiamo avuto un aumento dei volontari che vengono da noi e sono disposti ad aiutare, a fornire i loro servizi gratuitamente.
“Alcune persone hanno un bagaglio formativo di consulenza, altre invece vogliono solo aiutare in ogni modo che possono.”
Liam McGuinness, un pugile giovane e promettente, si è tolto la vita lunedì.
Il ventunenne è stata la decima persona giovane ad essersi tolta la vita a West Belfast negli ultimi mesi.
Il leader dello Sinn Fein Gerry Adams ha detto che ben 21 persone si sono tolte la vita nella zona durante quest’anno.
“Voglio congratularmi con i giovani che a seguito dei recenti suicidi hanno preso l’iniziativa di organizzare la veglia”, ha detto.
“Centinaia di persone sono venute a ricordare coloro che sono morti, a simpatizzare con le loro famiglie e ad ascoltare coloro che lavorano in questo settore a fornire informazioni e cercare di raggiungere chi ha bisogno di aiuto”.
Il parlamentare di West Belfast ha chiesto al ministro della salute di garantire i finanziamenti per la prevenzione del suicidio in Irlanda del Nord che sono limitati.
L’ha descritta come una “crisi” che ha bisogno di azione dell’Esecutivo.

Suicide vigil in west Belfast aims to raise awareness
About five hundred people have attended a vigil in west Belfast to show support for families bereaved through suicide.
The event was organised by two young people from the area, to publicise the help that is available.
They hope to establish more immediate contact between mental health professionals and those who need their help.
One of the organisers, Nuala Ni Scoilain said suicide is a “permanent solution to a temporary problem”.
“There are people there who want to help and the people just need to reach out and take the help that is there,” she said.
“We’re going to do whatever we can for whoever we can and we’ll do it in memory of people who haven’t got the help that they needed.
“We’ve had a surge of volunteers coming to us and saying that they are willing to help, give their services free of charge.
“Some people who have counselling backgrounds, some people who just want to help in any way that they can.”
Liam McGuinness, a promising young boxer, took his own life on Monday.
It has been reported that the 21-year-old was the 10th young person to have taken his own life in west Belfast in recent months.
Sinn Fein leader Gerry Adams said as many as 21 people have taken their own lives in the area this year.
“I want to commend the young people who in the aftermath of the recent suicides took the initiative to organise the vigil,” he said.
“Hundreds of people came to remember those who died, to sympathise with their families and to hear those who work in this field provide information and seek to reach out to others in need of help.”
The West Belfast MP has called on the health minister to ensure funding for suicide prevention in Northern Ireland is ring-fenced.
He described it as a “crisis” which needed action from the executive.
