Il consigliere comunale Adrian Watson, intervenendo alla riunione mensile del Consiglio di Antrim, ha detto di essere stato informato che la vendita del luogo era stata completata.
Descrivendola come la “più grande acquisizione” nella zona da “molti, molti anni”, il consigliere Watson ha detto che c’era il potenziale per ottenere una spinta importante all’occupazione locale.
Parlando all’Antrim Times, Watson ha detto di aver appreso della partecipazione di tre concorrenti all’acquisizione del sito.
L’acquirente che si è aggiucata Massereene Barracks sarebbe un grande azienda internazionale.
“Credo che ci saranno significative opportunità di lavoro” ha spiegato il consigliere Watson.
Ha aggiunto: “Sono particolarmente lieto che l’acquirente abbia mostrato una tale fiducia nella zona dove fare affari.
“Sarà uno sviluppo multimilionario”.
Il complesso militare, che si estende per quasi 17 ettari e comprende più di 37.000 metri quadrati di edifici e spazi di magazzino, era stato messo in vendita lo scorso ottobre con un prezzo di 4,5 milioni di euro.
Non è noto quanto è stato pagato, ma ci sono speculazioni su chi avrebbe acquistato il sito.
Nel marzo 2009 un commando repubblicano uccise due soldati britannici in procinto di partire con l’Afghanistan.
I genieri Mark Quinsey e Patrick Azimkar si stavano preparando a partire per una missione in Afghanistan, quando furono attaccati dai membri della Real IRA.

Massereene Barracks sold
Local councillor Adrian Watson, speaking at Thursday’s monthly meeting of Antrim Council, said he had been advised that the sale of the site had been completed.
Describing it is as the “biggest acquisition” in the borough for “many, many years”, Councillor Watson said there was real potential for a major boost to local employment.
Speaking to the Times after the meeting, Cllr. Watson said it was his understanding that there had been three main bidders with a serious interest in the site.
He added that it was his understanding that the eventual successful buyer was a major international company.
“I believe there will be significant employment opportunities,” Cllr. Watson said.
He added: “I’m particularly delighted that the buyer has shown such a vote of confidence in the borough for their business.
“This is going to be a multi, multi million pound development.”
The military complex, which stretches to almost 17 hectares and includes more than 37,000 square metres of buildings and warehouse space, had been put up for sale last October with an asking price of £4million.
It is not known how much was paid, but there is speculation over who has purchased the site.
In March 2009 dissident republicans shot two soldiers dead at the gates of the Army base as they collected a pizza order.
