L’attacco contro alcune auto e una casa nel quartiere protestante a West Belfast è stato definito “settario”
Quattro auto e la finestra del soggiorno di una casa sono state danneggiate nella zona di Ringford Park dopo che una folla di circa 100 giovani si è scatenati nella notte di venerdì.
Intorno alle 21:30 la polizia ha ricevuto dei reclami per una festa privata sfuggita di controllo nella zona di Brooke Drive.
Alcuni giovani sono usciti dal luogo della festa e si sono riversati in strada. Ci sarebbero stati dei tafferugli tra i partecipanti alla festa.
Nella zona ci sarebbero stati tra 50 e 100 giovani, ma un portavoce della polizia ha spiegato che non sarebbero stati compiuti reati.
In seguito la PSNI ha ricevuto un rapporto secondo cui, intorno alle 22, le automobili e la finestra di un’abitazione sono state danneggiate nella zona di Ringford Park.
Un portavoce ha detto che la polizia sta trattando l’incidente come un crimine di odio.
Ruth Parkinson, la cui auto è stata danneggiata nell’incidente, ha dichiarato: “Eravamo seduti a giocare con i nipoti quando un vicino di casa ha bussato alla nostra finestra dicendoci di chiamare la polizia.
“Siamo andati fuori e abbiamo visto giovani ragazzi e ragazze correre tutto intorno e la cose seguente sono stati i vetri delle auto infrante con mazze da hurling e mattoni che volavano da tutte le direzioni.
“Poi tutti sono corsi giù per la Blacks Road.
“A quanto pare erano tutti a una festa lungo la strada e hanno deciso di salire (verso il quartiere), ma chi va a una festa con i bastoni da hurling?
“Volevano venire qui a distruggere le auto o ferire qualcuno della nostra comunità”.
Il residente Sean Conlon ha parlato di esperienza “spaventosa”.
Ha aggiunto: “È stato estremamente preoccupante. Non è la prima volta che succede, ci sono state altre cose del genere nel corso dell’ultimo anno.
“È stato snervante, soprattutto vedendo una folla così grande, penso sia stata la cosa peggiore.
“Ogni altra volta si trattava di due o tre persone che camminavano lungio la strada, ma il fatto che ci fossero così tante persone è stata la cosa peggiore.
“Le persone erano spaventate, preoccupate e c’era molta rabbia.
“Questo genere di cose avviene da anni e nessuno sembra essere grado di poter fare qualcosa a riguardo”.
Il consigliere DUP per West Belfast, Brian Kingston, ha descritto l’attacco come “settario”.
Ha affermato: “Questo è stato un palese attacco settario del tutto immotivato contro una piccola comunità protestante a West Belfast.
“Sono lieto ci siano state condanne unanimi da entrambi i lati della comunità.
“Ora vogliamo vedere i nomi portati alla polizia che garantirà le condanne per questo palese crimine di odio settario.
Ha continuato: “Circa 50 giovani repubblicani, ragazzi e ragazze, sono giunti in Black Road intorno alle 22:30 di ieri (venerdì, Ndt) e hanno compiuto questo attacco completamente immotivato.
“Hanno sfondato i vetri di almeno quattro auto e di una casa nel quartiere di Suffolk.
“Si dice che i giovani fossero invitati a una festa nella zona di Ladybrook.
“I residenti di Suffolk sono dovuti uscire in strada per difendere le loro case.
“I rappresentanti della comunità di Lenadoon sono quindi arrivati sulla scena e hanno condannato l’attacco.
“Oltre 100 giovani repubblicani si erano riuniti in Black Road vicino al garage”.
Il consigliere Kingston ha fatto appello alla calma e all’aumento di pattuglie di polizia nella zona dopo una serie di simili incidenti avvenuti nell’area.
Ha aggiunto: “Mi appello alla calma e al sangue freddo di fronte a questi attacchi oltraggiosi.
“Ho parlato con il comandante della polizia Mike White per evidenziare la necessità di avere maggiori pattuglie nella zona per rassicurare i residenti e impedire un’escalation (di violenza).
“Organizzerò un incontro con lui, portando anche l’insoddisfazione dei residenti per il tempo impiegato dalla PSNI per rispondere alle segnalazioni di questo attacco.
“I residenti di Suffolk hanno gli stessi diritti di chiunque altro di vivere liberi da molestie settarie e mi richiedono sforzi congiunti da entrambe le parti della comunità per dimostrare che gli attacchi di questo tipo sono del tutto inaccettabili e non saranno tollerati”.
Il consigliere dello Sinn Féin Matt Garrett ha aggiunto: “Una folla ubriaca proveniente dalla zona di Brooke ieri sera (venerdì, Ndt) ha perso il controllo nella zona di Blacks Road, attaccando case e auto appartenenti ai residenti.
“Questo attacco vergognoso è motivato da settarismo.
“Ci sono persone che lavorano duramente nell’interfaccia di Blacks Road/Lenadoon/Suffolk per pemettere che i residenti possano andare avanti con la loro vita, liberi da questo genere di comportamenti.
“Non sono rappresentativi delle persone che vivono in quella zona e voglio dire che molti dei giovani coinvolti sono giunti da fuori area.
“Ero in contatto con la PSNI la notte scorsa per ottenere più risorse nella zona in grado di affrontare l’incidente.
“Oggi voglio essere di nuovo in contatto con loro per assicurarmi che non si ripeta di questo attacco.
“Chiunque abbia ulteriori informazioni su questo attacco dovrebbe portarle immediatamente alla polizia.
“L’intera comunità di West Belfast vuole vivere libera da intimidazioni e settarismo. Continueranno a lottare nonostante le azioni di questa folla ubriaca”.

West Belfast attack ‘sectarian’
DUP and Sinn Féin representatives have described an attack on cars and a home in a west Belfast Protestant estate as “sectarian”.
Four cars and the living room window of a home were damaged in the Ringford Park area after a crowd of around 100 youths went on the rampage on Friday night.
Police received a report of a house party going out of control in the Brooke Drive area at around 9.30pm.
A number of youths moved from the party into the street and there were reports of scuffles between the party-goers.
It was reported that there were between 50 to 100 youths in the area, however, a police spokesman said no offences were noted by officers at the time.
Police then received a report at 10pm that cars and the window of a home had been damaged in the Ringford Park area.
A PSNI spokesman said police are treating the incident as a hate crime.
Ruth Parkinson, whose car was damaged in the incident, said: “We were sitting playing with the grandchildren and a neighbour knocked our window to tell us to phone the police.
“We went out and seen the crowds of young girls and fellas running all around the place and the next thing was the cars’ windows were put in with hurley bats and bricks were flying from all directions.
“Then they all ran back down the Blacks Road.
“Apparently they were all at a party down the road and they decided to come up, but who goes to a party with hurley bats?
“They had intended to come in to destroy cars or hurt someone in our community.”
Resident Sean Conlon told UTV the experience was “frightening”.
He added: “It was extremely worrying. It’s not the first time it’s happened there has been spates of this kind of thing happening on and off over the last year or so.
“It was nerve-wracking, especially seeing such a large crowd, I think that was the worst thing.
“Any other time it’s happened it’s been usually two or three random people walking up the road but the fact there was so many of them made it worse.
“People were frightened and worried and there was a lot of anger about.
“This kind of thing has been happening for years and no one seems to be in any position of power to do anything about it.”
West Belfast DUP Councillor Brian Kingston condemned the attack as “sectarian”.
He said: “This was a blatant and totally unprovoked sectarian attack on a small Protestant community in west Belfast.
“I welcome that there has been condemnation from both sides of the community.
“What we need to see now is names being brought forward to the police which will secure convictions for this blatant sectarian hate crime.
He continued: “Around 50 republican youths, both male and female, came up Blacks Road last night at around 10.30pm and carried out this totally unprovoked attack.
“They smashed windows of at least four cars and at least one house in the Suffolk estate.
“It is reported that the youths had been attending a party in the Ladybrook area.
“Suffolk residents had to come out onto the streets to defend their homes.
“Community representatives from Lenadoon arrived on the scene and condemned the attack.
“By this stage over 100 republican youths had gathered on Blacks Road near the garage.”
Councillor Kingston called for calm and for increased police patrols in the area following a spate of similar incidents in the area.
He added: “I appeal for calm and cool heads in the face of these outrageous attacks.
“I have spoken to police commander Mike White to highlight the need for increased patrols in the area to provide reassurance and to prevent any escalation.
“I will be arranging an early meeting with him, including the issue of dissatisfaction from residents over the time taken for the PSNI to respond to reports of this attack.
“The people of Suffolk estate have the same rights as anyone else to live free from sectarian harassment and I call for concerted efforts from both sides of the community to prove that attacks like this are totally unacceptable and will not be tolerated.”
Sinn Féin Councillor Matt Garrett added: “A drunken mob emanating from the Brooke area last night went on the rampage in the Blacks Road area attacking homes and cars belonging to residents.
“This is disgraceful and was motivated by sectarianism.
“There are people working hard at the Blacks Road/Lenadoon/Suffolk interface to make sure that residents can get on with their lives free from this type of behaviour.
“It is not representative of the people that live in the area and I would say a lot of those involved are from outside the area.
“I was in contact with the local PSNI last night to get more resources into the area to deal with the incident.
“Today I will again be in touch with them to make sure there is no repeat of this attack.
“Anyone with any information about this attack should bring it immediately to the police.
“The wider west Belfast community want to live free from intimidation and sectarianism, they will continue to strive for that despite the actions of this drunken mob.”
