Trouble flared in Derry’s Bogside

Derry, Fountain
A Derry police chief has appealed to parents to know the whereabouts of their children following disorder which broke out on Friday night.

A Derry police chief has appealed to parents to know the whereabouts of their children following disorder which broke out on Friday night.

Area Commander, Chief Inspector Jon Burrows was speaking after police dealt with disorder in the Fountain area and at the flyover at Lecky Road.

It’s understood that a number of incidents of disorder have broken out in the area during the past week.

Police revealed that Trouble broke out at around 7.30pm with youths throwing stones in the area.

When police arrived at the scene petrol bombs were thrown towards their vehicles and the Fountain estate.

The flyover had bins and rubbish pulled on to the road and set alight, blocking vehicular access.

Around forty youths were involved in the disorder and approximately 25 petrol bombs were thrown.

There were no reports of any injuries or arrests and the area was reported calm by midnight.

Mr. Burrows said: “I would urge all parents to know the whereabouts of their children and to ensure they are safe and not involved in incidents like we saw in the Fountain area last night.

“The possibilty of serious injury or death is very real when lethal weapons such as petrol bombs are thrown.

“The disorder in the area also put members of the community at risk as emergency services vehicles were unable to access certain areas of the city for a time last night.

“Young people engaging in serious disorder must be aware that when caught they will be dealt with through the courts and will face the consequences a criminal conviction will bring.”

Sinn Féin Councillor Patricia Logue has said those involved in a number of nights of trouble in the Bogside area are totally unrepresentative of the local community.

Councillor Patricia Logue said: “The trouble over the last few nights has been caused by a very small number of young people in and around the Lecky Road Flyover. Some of them are as young as 12,13 years of age. It is quite evident that theres some degree of orchestration going on in the background, this trouble just didn’t come out of nowhere .

“I would like to state clearly that those involved in these incidents are unrepresentative of the local community.

“Those behind the wrecking and burning have only succeeded in terrorising the Bogside community by inflicting inconveniences upon them and the wider Derry public.

“When it is all over what we have is the local community being left to pick up the pieces.
