La polizia ha comunicato che 56 agenti sono rimasti feriti durante una delle peggiori notti di disordini viste a Belfast
Un agente è stato messo fuori causa dopo essere stato colpito al collo da una ringhiera di ferro che è rimbalzata sul suo scudo antisommossa.
Una donna poliziotto è stata medicata sul posto da un civile mentre i colleghi la proteggevano con gli scudi dagli oggetti lanciati dai lealisti.
I disordini sono scoppiati dopo il blocco di Royal Avenue da parte dei lealisti nel tentativo di evitare che la parata repubblicana anti internamento percorresse la strada.
La polizia ha sparato 26 proiettili di plastica e ha eseguito sette arresti nel corso dei disordini in Royal Avenue.
IL parlamentare dell’Ulster Unionist Party Michael Copeland è stato ferito dopo essere stato colpito alla gamba con un manganello da un agente di polizia.
Ha fatto una denuncia alla PSNI che è stata passata all’ufficio del Police Ombudsman.
Il vice comandante della PSNI George Hamilton ha detto che la violenza potrebbe avere un effetto duraturo sull’Irlanda del Nord.
“Pur facilitando la decisione della Commissione Parate per la parata di stasera e le proteste ad essa associate, la polizia ha subito pesanti e intensi attacchi da persone intente solo a provocare disordini”, ha affermato l’ufficiale di polizia.
“Mentre l’Irlanda del Nord si muove in avanti, l’effetto della violenza di stasera ha il potenziale di danneggiare l’economia locale e la reputazione di Belfast come destinazione turistica”.

56 PSNI OFFICERS INJURED AND SEVEN PEOPLE ARRESTED OVER BELFAST VIOLENCE
POLICE have revealed that a total 56 police officers were injured during one of the worst nights of rioting seen in Belfast.
One police officer was knocked out during clashes with loyalist protestors after he was struck on the neck by an iron railing which bounced off his riot shield.
And a female officer had to be treated at the scene by a member of the public while colleagues used riot shields as protection from loyalist missiles.
Trouble erupted after loyalists blocked Royal Avenue to prevent a republican anti-internment rally walking through it.
The police fired 26 plastic bullets and made seven arrests on Friday evening amid sustained rioting in Royal Avenue.
Ulster Unionist MLA Michael Copeland was also injured after he was struck on the leg with a baton by a police officer.
He has made a complaint to the PSNI which has been passed to the office of the Police Ombudsman.
PSNI Assistant Chief Constable George Hamilton said the violence could have a lasting effect on Northern Ireland.
“Whilst facilitating the Parades Commission determination for tonight’s parade and associated protests, police have come under heavy and sustained attack by crowds intent on creating disorder,” said ACC Hamilton.
“As Northern Ireland moves ahead, the effect of tonight’s violence has the potential to damage the local economy and the reputation of Belfast as a tourist destination.”
