Marcus Walker, 28 anni, e la sua compagna Nicola, 24 anni, affermano di essere stati costretti a lasciare la loro abitazione nella zona di Westland a North Belfast a causa di una “prolungata” campagna di intimidazioni settarie.
Nell’ultimo incidente, la loro porta di ingresso è stata abbattuta e le lettere “NLR” (New Lodge Road) scritta sulle pareti di casa.
Solo la scorsa settimana alcuni uomini a volto coperto hanno cercato di versare della benzina attraverso la fessura per le lettere.
La coppia, che ha una bimba di quattro mesi, dice di non sentirsi più al sicuro.
“Ho dormito tre ore la scorsa settimana”, ha spiegato Walker al Belfast Telegraoh. “Vado avanti e indietro per il corridoio tutta notte, pensando a cosa accadrà la prossima volta. La bambina non può stare nella stanza anteriore per paura di un mattone che voli attraverso la finestra, ma l’ultimo tentativo è stata la benzina attraverso la casella delle lettere. Non so cosa faremo”.
Gli operatori comunitari della zona affermano che gli attacchi fanno parte del tentativo di allontanare i protestanti dall’enclave di Westland. Sono iniziati pochi giorni dopo l’arrivo di Walker e della sua famiglia.
Ha aggiunto: “Non si tratta solo della nostra casa, stanno cercando di intimorire tutti i residenti”.
Il lavoratore comunitario di North Belfast, Winston Irvine, ha affermato: “Le persone coinvolte dovrebbero vergognarsi per questo attacco settario contro una giovane e vulnerabile famiglia”.
La polizia ha confermato l’apertura delle indagini contro gli attacchi settari.
Sectarian campaign forces family out
Marcus Walker (28) and his partner Nicola (24) claim they are being forced from their home in the Westland area of north Belfast because of a “relentless” campaign of sectarian intimidation.
In the latest incident their front door was kicked down and the letters ‘NLR’ (New Lodge Road) spray-painted on to the house.
Just last week a gang of masked men tried to pour petrol through the letterbox of the house.
The couple, who have a four-month-old daughter, say they no longer feel safe.
“I would say I have slept three hours in the past week,” Mr Walker told the Belfast Telegraph. “I just pace the hallway all night wondering what is going to happen next. The child cannot stay in the front room in case a brick comes through the window, but the final straw was the petrol through the letterbox. I just do not know what we are going to do.”
Community workers in the area claim the attacks are part of a concerted effort to drive Protestants out of the Westland enclave. They started within days of Mr Walker and his family moving in.
He added: “It’s not just our house, they are trying to intimidate all the residents. ”
North Belfast community worker Winston Irvine said: “Those involved should hang their heads in shame at this sectarian attack on a vulnerable young family.”
In a statement the PSNI said investigations into a number of sectarian attacks were ongoing.
