La polizia sta indagando sul lancio di vernice contro il memoriale a ricordo delle vittime dell’esplosione al McGurk’s Bar del 1971
La polizia sta trattando l’attacco in North Queen Street come crimine d’odio.
Il memoriale è situato a North Belfast, dove 15 persone morirono e 17 rimasero ferite quando una bomba lasciata all’interno del McGurk’s Bar esplose causando il crollo dell’edificio.
L’attentato fu eseguito dai paramilitari lealisti dell’Ulster Volunteer Force (UVF), ma inizialmente fu presentato dalla Royal Ulster Constabulary (RUC) come un “autogol” dell’IRA.
Robert McClenaghan, il cui nonno settantatreenne Phillip Garry fu la vittima più anziana, ha detto: “Sono quasi in lacrime per aver sentito che il memoriale è stato profanato.
“Il memoriale è un simbolo della nostra campagna.
“I nostri cari hanno perso la vita e poche ore dopo hanno perso la loro reputazione perché falsamente accusati di aver costruito la bomba. È un’ingiustizia cui stiamo cercando di porre rimedio attraverso i mezzi di comunicazioni, i tribunali e l’immaginario pubblico, come appunto il memoriale.
“Stiamo solo cercando di ottenere la verità per i nostri cari e parte di questo è il memoriale.
“Non capisco proprio il motivo di gettarci contro della vernice. È irragionevole e senza senso”.
Anche Ciarán MacAirt, la cui nonna Kathleen Irvine morì in attentato e autore del libro The McGurk’s Bar Bombing: Collusion, Cover-Up and a Campaign for Truth, ha reagito alla notizia su Twitter.

Alban Maginness, parlamentare SDLP di North Belfast, ha parlato di incidente “deplorevole”.
“L’attacco al memoriale è un attacco alla comunità e un insulto alla memoria di coloro che sono stati uccisi e feriti nel 1971” ha detto il politico.
“Vorrei incoraggiare chiunque abbia informazioni su questo attacco a segnalarlo alle autorità. Attacchi di questo genere portano solo dolore alle famiglie e fanno riaffiorare dolorosi ricordi a chi lotta per la giustizia da ben 44 anni”.
Il consigliere Sinn Féin JJ Magee ha condannato i responsabili dell’attacco.
“Questo è un insulto a tutti coloro che sono stati uccisi e feriti nell’attentato al McGurk’s Bar” ha affermato.
“Tutti i monumenti dovrebbero essere trattati con dignità e rispetto e non dovrebbero diventare un bersaglio.
“Vorrei fare appello a chiunque abbia informazioni su questo attacco di comunicarle alla PSNI”.
Un ispettore della PSNI ha lanciato un appello a chiunque abbia informazioni sull’incidente di contattare la stazione di polizia di Tennent Street al numero non di emergenza 101 o di chiamare anonimamente Crimestoppers.

McGurk’s Bar bomb memorial attacked
Police are investigating after paint was thrown on a memorial to those killed in the 1971 McGurk’s Bar bombing in north Belfast.
Police said they are treating the attack at North Queen Street as a hate crime.
A mural and granite tribute is at the site where 15 people died and 17 others were injured when a bomb left on the bar’s doorstep exploded causing the building to collapse.
The atrocity was carried out by the paramilitary Ulster Volunteer Force (UVF), but had initially been presented by the RUC as an accidental “own goal” by the IRA.
Robert McClenaghan, whose 73-year-old grandfather Phillip Garry was the oldest person killed, said: “I am almost in tears to hear that our memorial has been desecrated.
“It is something that is symbolic of our campaign.
“Our loved ones lost their lives and within hours they lost their reputation after being falsely accused of making the bomb. That’s an injustice we are trying to rectify through the media, through the courts and through the public imagery such as the memorial.
“We are just trying to get the truth for them and part of that is the memorial.
“I just don’t understand the politics of throwing paint on it. It is just mindless and senseless that somebody would do that.”
Ciarán MacAirt, whose grandmother Kathleen Irvine also died in the bomb attack, also reacted to the news on Twitter.

SDLP North Belfast MLA Alban Maginness described the incident as “deplorable”.
“The attack on the memorial is an attack on the community and an insult to the memory of those who were killed and injured in 1971,” he said.
“I would encourage anyone with information on this attack to report it to the authorities. Attacks like this cause nothing but hurt to the families and brings back painful memories for those who have been fighting for justice for the past 44 years.”
Sinn Féin councillor JJ Magee also condemned those behind the attack.
“This is an insult to all those who were killed and injured in the in McGurk’s Bar bombing, he said.
“All memorials should be treated with dignity and respect and should not be targeted in this way.
“I would appeal to anyone with information on this attack to bring it forward to the PSNI.”
