Il vice sindaco UUP di Castlereagh aderisce al DUP, citando tra le ragioni del suo abbandono le “fazioni in guerra” nel partito
Era consigliere per Castlereagh East sin dal 2001, ma ora si dice “disilluso” per la direzione assunta dal partito unionista.
“Sono entrato in politica per aiutare la gente e rendere la zona che rappresento un posto migliore”, afferma Drysdale.
“L’UUP non ha strategia, né a Castlereagh né in altri luoghi in Irlanda del Nord, per compiere il cambiamento. Ha cessato di essere un partito politico nel senso inteso dalla gente ed è divenuto una confederazione di razioni in guerra”.
Drysdale ha anche criticato il patto tra UUP e Conservatives sotto la sigla UCUNF, definendolo “regressivo”.
“Il collegamento con i Tories, iniziato con Reg Empey e proseguito con Tom Elliott mostra che l’UUP è preparato ad allinearsi con le forze regressive che puntano contro i più vulnerabili nella nostra comunità”, ha continuato.
Parlando domenica, il leader del DUP Peter Robinson ha accolto con favore la mossa, affermando: “David è uno dei miei consiglieri locali e so che ha una buona reputazione di grande lavoratore che si prende cura con passione della comunità.
“Sarà un’importante aggiunta alla squadra del DUP sia a Castlereagh che a East Belfast”.

UUP Deputy Mayor defects to DUP
The UUP Deputy Mayor for Castlereagh has defected to the DUP, citing “warring factions” within the party amongst his reasons for leaving.
He has served as an Ulster Unionist councillor for the Castlereagh East area since 2001, but said he has grown “disillusioned” with the party’s direction.
“I got involved in politics to help people and make the area I represent a better place,” Mr Drysdale said.
“The UUP hasn’t the strategy, either in Castlereagh or anywhere else in Northern Ireland to deliver such change. It has ceased being a political party in the normal sense that people understand and has become a loose confederation of warring factions.”
Mr Drysdale also criticised the UCUNF pact between the UUP and Conservatives, which he called “regressive”.
“The Tory link-up, started by Reg Empey and built upon further by Tom Elliott shows that the UUP is prepared to align itself with regressive forces targeting the most vulnerable in our community,” he continued.
Speaking on Sunday, DUP Leader Peter Robinson welcomed the move, saying: “David is one of my local councillors and I know he has a good reputation as a hard-working representative who cares passionately about the community.
“He will be a valuable addition to the DUP team in Castlereagh and in East Belfast as a whole.”
